I normally like Kohler’s column when he unpacks economic news, but when he digresses into tech topics, I’m less likely to read him. I did this time (because things may change after all) but all I got from it is GenAI KoolAid and vaguely hinted at problems that #TechBros are keen on glossing over.

It is a pity that the author is not turning his analytical mind to take a closer look at what the frenetic pace of #GenAI development and the #GenAISlop it splashes about the place as it inexorably pushes forward with not only #TechnicalDebt but also #CognitiveDebt laden implementations. Sooner than we think, we’ll be faced with problems we do not know how to solve for want of the ability to #FaultFind in a sea of #sloppy and #incomprehensible machine produced code mashups.

Where to an economy held hostage to runaway coding machines? The ‘wagering system’ that is the stock market will start to look like ‘doctored’ one-arm bandits of yore. Where the wealth will flow is very obvious.

AI got personal last week, and it's more complicated than we think

A fake news story about me, a series of AI breakthroughs and a resignation in the tech world show that 2026 could be pivotal for AI.

@CatEveryHour this looks like #genAIslop.

The figures are stark. GenAI slop is severely impacting the #CreativeArts and particularly the #writingcommunity

" 86% of authors say GenAI has already reduced their earnings
72% of authors say job opportunities have already been cut
57% of authors say their career is no longer sustainable
43% of literary translators and 37% of SoA illustrators saw earnings fall due to GenAI
26% of illustrators and 36% of literary translators report cancelled or redirected commissions "

This is a report on the UK state of affairs, but it could equally be representative of what is happening here in Australia.

@radioclash @JamesWidman @UweHalfHand @whitequark @jacqueline unfortunately though, as writers, musicians and all other kinds of artist, work has already been stolen and work is now going unpaid, uncredited, thanks to the widespread theft from these companies.

As a writer I refuse to use it for those reasons, for the environmental impact, for the cognitive atrophy.
It's not necessary. Anything it 'helps' with can be achieved with one's own brain or by talking with other actual people.
The main cases against it are ethical. Even if it weren't spewing nonsense much of the time, that would remain. #genAIslop

Here’s the thiing about VanBadham’s writing, you’re either comfortable with it or you’re not. That’s it. Everything else about it comes down to ‘is it the truth?’, or ‘is she laying it on a bit thick?’ The plain truth is there are no lies in her articles, they just make us feel very uncomfortable at time. And so they should because she works hard at breaking down the ‘new-normal’ layers being lathered on by main stream media and propaganda newstainment corporations over our social conscience sensitivity. The whole reason for the current ‘information overload’ is to overwhelm our sense of ethical and moral judgement. The more shit is thrown at us the more likely we’ll adapt to living in a sewerags pit where the ‘new’ robber barons wish to corral the rest of us.
With the above in mind, Van’s latest is a must read:

‘There was a time when leaders sought government to influence history, not to roll over supine to unelectable dweebs they would have rightfully avoided at high school.’

The AI chatbot’s torrent of nonconsensual deepfakes isn’t its first scandal and won’t be its last. Responsible governments should simply ban it

@plagiarismtoday unique among publishing outlets, or generally?
No to both?
News outlets are using LLMs, and/or paying contractors who do, scientific publishers are either trying to deal with piles of papers no human wrote or just publishing them anyway and sometimes being pulled up on it, random people are out using ChatGPT to write their blogposts.

Unless like e.g. Cool Zone Media, the outlet says it is committed to human-created content only, it's everywhere.
