PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – AIFA and ARS together with Palermo for the event “The Roadmap for Appropriateness: Precision Medicine between Innovation and Regional Practice”. An initiative of dialogue between the Agency and the regions, through two panels that allowed a review of the use of data and innovation in therapeutic decisions, as well as the common strategy that, at the regional level, can lead to the correct and sustainable use of the drug and its fair access. The proceedings were opened by the ARS President, Gaetano Galvagno, who brought the importance of the regional role to the attention of the audience in relation to the challenge of precision medicine: “In terms of healthcare, the virtuous means is appropriateness, a balance between ensuring access for citizens to the best treatments and the responsibility of preserving the national health system – Galvagno said –. Sicily is also called to the challenge of precision medicine and the need not to fall behind in the race for innovation, which must, however, be absolutely coordinated with dialogue at all levels.” “The institutional setting where this game is played for the future of Sicilians is also the regional assembly, called to translate national guidelines into regional laws regarding advanced pharmacotherapies,” he added. Giorgio Mulè, Vice-President of the Chamber of Deputies, also spoke, explaining how “medicine 5.0 is fundamental to solve a cultural problem present in this country, building a screening system that precedes the excellence of precision medicine.” “Either we have the capability to perform screenings, or precision medicine will not be enough, despite being a remarkable driver for national medicine. We can and must talk about all of this if we have the ability to build a screening system that precedes the excellence of precision medicine.” Robert Giovanni Nisticò, President of AIFA, also spoke, emphasizing the theme of innovation and the sustainability of the pharmaceutical system: “Pharmaceutical spending is growing, so we need to work on tools that can also refine control and prescriptions for our patients – he said. “Italy is a long-lived country, where many drugs are used, but where perhaps more prevention and attention to appropriate prescribing are needed.” The focus was on the theme of pharmacogenomics, i.e., the interaction with tools such as algorithms and data to ensure that patients are at the center of their complexity and uniqueness through the integration of data from basic sciences. “If we can bring these innovative tools more and more – he emphasized – we will be able to protect patient health and contain pharmaceutical spending.” On the innovation front, “AIFA must promote research so that those who produce drugs can do so in the best way. The use of artificial intelligence is a strong tool for the pharmaceutical industry, and AIFA must accompany this process and understand how it is used by our partners,” said Giovanni Pavesi, Administrative Director of AIFA. Finally, the intervention of Marcello Gemmato, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health, who reiterated the importance of sustainability in a system where “more and more impactful drugs are being introduced into commerce from an economic point of view, but which solve the symptomatic picture of even serious diseases.” “The collaboration between AIFA and the Regions – he continued – is fundamental, for this reason a series of scattered interlocutions have been imagined throughout the territory, from Lombardy to Sicily. An exercise of AIFA’s perception towards the regions but also towards the scientific and university community. All of this – Gemmato concluded – with the objective of caring for the citizen better, maintaining as a horizon the sustainability of our system as envisioned and outlined by the founding fathers of the Constitution in Article 32.
