I have made some art, like this monoprint, about some of the many folk traditions around May Day. May Eve is celebrated with bonfires for Walpurgisnacht and Hexennacht (Walpurgis night and Witches’ Night as celebrated in Germany). May Eve is the feast day of Saint Walpurga in celebration of her canonization May 1, 870. But folklorists tie it to a more ancient celebration of a moon festival for Walpurga, 🧵

I pulled some more prints from my #gelplate on my #horse theme. I was thinking of the extraordinary #paintings on the walls of caves in Southern France created by our ancestors tens of thousands of years ago.

It's quite easy to get a half-decent print off a #gelli plate, but to get something really worthwhile requires a depth of expertise I simply don't have. But the process is immense fun. What's not to like about playing with fields of pure colour?

What a fun afternoon we had yesterday at Brook Arts Hub in #StratforduponAvon learning the basics of #gelplateprinting.

Since I sold my etching press I've been looking for an alternative printmaking method which can easily be done from a small home studio. Perhaps the playful and experimental process of #gelliprinting is the answer? We shall see.

A hint: a good place to find echoes is in the mountains. This first layer I made with a gel plate for the second prompt #FolktaleWeekEcho. Next up will be a #linocut.

The story of Echo and Narcissus is lovely but I wanted a more unusual story so I found a story about echoes from Japan.
