Due anni di bombardamenti a tappeto sulla Striscia di Gaza hanno lasciato gravi lesioni permanenti su 43mila palestinesi. È la stima diffusa dall’Organizzazione mondiale della sanità. Oltre 5mila persone hanno subito amputazioni, più di 2mila hanno avuto lesioni al midollo spinale con la conseguente perdita di importanti funzioni motorie. Più di 3.400 vivono le conseguenze di ustioni gravi e oltre 1.300 hanno riportato lesioni cerebrali traumatiche. Inoltre, un ferito su quattro ha meno di 18 anni.
Una fotografia drammatica, se si pensa che il sistema sanitario è stato completamente distrutto e che i medici e le organizzazioni umanitarie lavorano in una costante scarsità di farmaci e materiale medico a causa delle restrizioni imposte dal governo israeliano. Parlando a Madrid insieme al premier spagnolo Pedro Sanchez, il direttore generale dell’Oms, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreysus ha spiegato che il flusso degli aiuti resta ampliamente insufficiente, in quanto “dovrebbero attraversare il confine circa 600 camion” al giorno “ma questo non sta accadendo”, ha rilevato. Secondo il direttore dell’Oms, si osservano progressi “probabilmente nelle evacuazioni mediche” dalla Striscia, mentre persistono gravi difficoltà nella fornitura di medicinali e forniture sanitarie. “L’invio di farmaci non sta arrivando come dovrebbe”, ha rilevato. Ha inoltre segnalato che “quando aumenta il numero di camion ” diretti a Gaza “alcuni trasportano materiali e prodotti destinati alla vendita e i gazawi non possono permetterseli“. Per questo, ha aggiunto, è necessario rafforzare “in modo specifico” l’invio di aiuti umanitari.
L’Oms sta dando priorità alla ricostruzione delle infrastrutture sanitarie nella Striscia, poiché “gli ospedali sono scomparsi”, ha osservato, riferendosi al livello di distruzione provocato dalla guerra. Two years of carpet bombing in the Gaza Strip have left severe, permanent injuries on 43,000 Palestinians. This is the widespread estimate from the World Health Organization. More than 5,000 people have undergone amputations, over 2,000 have suffered spinal cord injuries with the consequent loss of important motor functions. More than 3,400 live with the consequences of severe burns and over 1,300 have sustained traumatic brain injuries. Furthermore, one in four injured individuals is under the age of 18.

A dramatic photograph, considering that the healthcare system has been completely destroyed and that doctors and humanitarian organizations are working in constant shortages of drugs and medical supplies due to restrictions imposed by the Israeli government. Speaking in Madrid alongside Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus explained that the flow of aid remains largely insufficient, as “around 600 trucks should cross the border daily “but this is not happening,” he noted. According to the WHO director, there are “probably” advances “in medical evacuations” from the Strip, while serious difficulties persist in the supply of medicines and medical supplies. “The delivery of drugs is not arriving as it should,” he noted. He also reported that “when the number of trucks directed to Gaza increases, some transport materials and products intended for sale and Gazans cannot afford them.” For this reason, he added, it is necessary to “specifically” strengthen the sending of humanitarian aid.

The WHO is prioritizing the reconstruction of healthcare infrastructure in the Strip, as “hospitals have disappeared,” he observed, referring to the level of destruction caused by the war. On his part, Pedro Sanchez reiterated the need to respect international law and to offer “a political horizon to Palestine,” which passes through “the recognition of the State of Palestine, which has every right to exist,” like Israel.

Il libro che la giornalista Anna Maria Selini ha scritto per Altreconomia con le illustrazioni di Fogliazza, “Caro Vik ti scrivo. Lettere e reportage da Oslo a Gaza”, è la testimonianza più tangibile del fatto che Vittorio non è mai morto veramente. I suoi scritti, le sue analisi, i suoi video, che ancora riempiono YouTube, ci parlano di Gaza all’inizio degli anni Duemila, ma anche di Gaza oggi. Perché i semi dell’erba velenosa e maligna che Vik aveva visto sbarcando dalla Freedom Flotilla, con cui era arrivato a Gaza nell’agosto del 2008, erano già lì: La Striscia era già un campo di concentramento a cielo aperto voluto dal governo israeliano. Yesterday, it suddenly started raining nonstop from 10 o'clock until morning and continued throughout the day. It was very heavy and torrential rain, and as usual, we hadn't been there long before water began to surround us from all sides, the flimsy tents started to tear, and water flooded us from every direction.
