I have old cones of yarn meant for machine knitting (maybe weaving?), and I've been testing them to see if they're good. Once I knew the yarn wouldn't break apart under tension, I tried a few new stitches...

The previously knit-and-washed swatch is at the top of the picture, and today's piece is across the bottom - this fabric changes when it's washed, mostly shrinking vertically.
one of my least favorite parts of #knitting is making gauge swatches.
a pattern will tell you "18 stitches and 25 rows = 4 inches by 4 inches", and then you have to knit usually slightly more than that and measure it.
it makes your product more closely match the pattern, which is good if you're making something fitted, but it just feels like busywork ... anyway, that's what I'm doing currently for my #100DaysProject
