Not gonna lie, it kinda irritates me how much talk there is about indie games journalism now that ex corporate types are running stuff like Aftermath, while existing indie journalists like myself kinda get ignored.
There has always been great work done by independents in this field, they’re just the bloggers and YouTubers the community completely ignores.

The video game website Polygon was founded in 2012 by Vox Media and while it still exists, it's vastly changed as a result of being sold to Valnet a couple of weeks ago, with the majority of staff being laid off. @aftermath.site's @nathangrayson.bsky.social spoke to former staff, some of whom had been there since the beginning, about why their time at the site meant so much to them. "Sometimes it’s tough to work in something fun like games, because when the world crumbles around you, it all starts to feel a little meaningless," said Ryan Gilliam, former guides producer. "But — stupid as it sounds — I always tried to tell myself that, with our guides, we were helping people enjoy their hobby a little more, and make their game time a little more relaxing. I wasn’t making a difference in my 9 to 5, but in my head, there were people who were making a difference who would come home and try to relax for a few hours before getting back out there. And in those moments of relaxation, they’d pull up a Polygon guide for 'Persona 5' classroom answers, or a walkthrough on how to get the latest 'Destiny' Exotic. I don’t know if that ever happened, but the thought always made me smile."
