New Read - Fangirl, Volume 4 (Final Volume)

Squeee!!

Volume 4 of this OEL manga picks up at the hospital! Wren (Cather's twin sister) was in the hospital. Cather sees her Mother. Her Mother never wanted to be a mother. That's why she left. She wanted to be called by her name, not Mom. It's a rough moment, but real, between them.

The volume ties up a lot of loose ends. Cather's relationship gets more intimate with her new boyfriend. Wren and her reconnect after a horrifying moment. Reagan continues to be the most reasonable character in the series. It all just works.

The other aspect is about Cather and her fan-fiction. She has been desperate to beat the original author of the series she loves to the punch, releasing her fan-fiction ending to the series before her. But why? Why does she need to? She wrestles with that and recognizes things about herself.

She also finally writes a new story with new characters for her writing assignment.

Anyway, I loved this story overall. Will I read the original novel? Probably not. I prefer comics to dense text these days when it comes to reading stories.

But I did really enjoy it. Glad I finished it. It finished well.

New Read - Fangirl, Volume 3

So, I read Volumes 1 and 2 digitally a while back and when I was at the library over the weekend with my kids, I saw Volumes 3 and 4 on the shelf. Snatched them immediately. I need closure on this series!

For those who don't know, Fangirl is an OEL manga based on the novel of the same name by Rainbow Rowell. The story follows Cather, and her twin sister Wren, focusing on Cather, who is an aspiring writer who just started college and is very deep in the fan fiction community. Her current problem is that she is having a hard time writing anything that isn't based in fan fiction (i.e. with original characters).

In addition to that you have new romances blossoming, new friends at college, plus the situation with her family where their Dad raised her after their Mother ran off.

Anyway, this volume continues where the last left off and it's so well done. Gabi Nam's art is fantastic and the characters are so well crafted.

Cather is a great character and she seems to be starting to get a happier ending, when a huge division happens with her and her sister. And that last page. That last moment of the volume.

Ugh.

I'm trying to be as spoiler-free as possible, but I loved it. Looking forward to reading Volume 4.
