10 years ago today, the first direct detection of gravitational waves from a binary black hole merger was announced.
The German press conference took place at @mpi_grav in Hannover, simultaneously with press conferences in the US and in Italy.
Here's two pictures from the Hannover press conference in our large seminar room filled to the last seat.
On this day eight years ago, a very special stamp was announced.
The stamp features a numerical-relativity simulation of gravitational waves from a binary black hole coalescence. This simulation models the waves that were detected in September 2015 as GW150914, marking the first ever observation of this kind.
The simulation was performed by members of the “Astrophysical and Cosmological Relativity” department at the @mpi_grav in Potsdam.
