The pre-order discount is pretty good at the moment and makes it possible for me to afford a #GrinTechnologies rear hub motor kit.

Between the (optional) long-john cargo capacity up front and my #BikesAtWork #BikeTrailer that can be converted between 81cm/160cm/240cm lengths (or swapped out for my #BurleyTravoy trailer/handcart or just a set of panniers, I’ll be able to dial in what I need for the specific task without too much fuss. I hope.

"In this video Justin does a deep dive explaining the most exciting innovation to ebike hub motors in decades. Freegen is a novel modification to motor design that allows geared hub motors to both freewheel with no drag AND ALSO do regenerative braking. There is no longer a trade-off of one or the other. And it does this without any of the extra complexity of a traditional controlled clutch.

This new idea from the Israeli company Chargebike not only solves that problem, it also provides an a proportional regen based on how hard the lever is squeezed AND it can maintain that braking force even when the batteries are fully charged, something not possible with traditional controls."

It seems like using a hub set up will add drag as well as extra vehicle mass, which is unfortunate if the brake isn't extending vehicle range.

I wonder if there's a way to mount the turbine shaft to a caliper that can engage against the wheel like a V-style rim brake, so the drag is only applied when a brake lever is engaged.

"…its braking benefit is often more important than its efficiency gains."

**"**Grin Technologies, a Vancouver-based electric bicycle parts manufacturer, teamed up with MAC to improve the motor. The result is the GMAC, which offers a new clutchless design and thus enables regen braking, even with a smaller, lightweight geared hub motor."
