Satellite gravimetry measures the Earth's gravitational field from low Earth orbit. GRACE Follow-On uses LISA technology to monitor critical indicators of climate change caused by changes in the Earth's gravitational field. GRACE Follow-On beobachtet mittels LISA-Technologie kritische Indikatoren des Klimawandels durch Veränderungen im Gravitationsfeld der Erde. Die Mission setzt dazu ein Laserinterferometer mit Nanometer-Genauigkeit zwischen zwei Satelliten ein. New profile picture: GRACE Follow-On is a tandem of two satellites orbiting the Earth 220 kilometers apart in the same orbit 490 kilometers above the ground. It measures the distance between the satellites using microwaves (blue) and a laser interferometer (red).

Because of their expertise, @mpi_grav researchers are involved in the design of the laser interferometer for this and similar future missions.

So would love to see a spacecraft similar to the twin GRACE-FO spacecraft that are mapping groundwater on Earth.

A similar mission for mapping potential subsurface water on Mars in detail, who knows maybe there are still aquifiers deep down with secrets from a long distant wet past.
