Former congressional staffer accused of faking anti-Trump attack in New Jersey
A former staffer for a New Jersey congressman who told authorities she had been attacked and lacerated by three men while walking in a nature preserve this summer is now facing charges that she filed a false report. The 26-year-old woman, who worked for Republican Rep. Jeff Van Drew, and a friend had reported she was attacked July 23 at a nature preserve in Egg Harbor Township. Federal prosecutors say the pair reported that the attackers had a gun, knew the woman’s name and that she worked for Van Drew. But they allege that further investigation determined she had paid a body-modification artist to make the various lacerations. An attorney for the woman noted she is “presumed innocent” under the law.
