For a long time, I switched from using Steam as my primary game management front-end to using GOG Galaxy. It could easily bring in the games I had on Steam, GOG, the 100+ freebies from Epic, the couple from Humble Bundle, even XBox GamePass for PC when I still had that.
it can also do Ubisoft and Origin but I didn't have any games on those.
it was good enough to replace Playnite which was what I was using before.
However, I got a Steam Deck. Suddenly, I had to either jump through hoops to play games or purchase them again. I actually did buy some games again just so I could more easily play them on my Deck.
Steam is my first choice for purchasing games again and it is because of the Steam Deck.
I know GOG intentionally abandoned any plans to build a Linux native version of GOG Galaxy, which is unfortunate, since they sell Linux versions of games. I've even installed the Linux versions from GOG on my Linux laptop in the past and they work fine, just no Launcher or update manager.
Another reason I went back to Steam was because of the build-in Steam Workshop support so I didn't have to go to Nexus Mods for some of the more popular mods. That's doubly true on Steam Deck where I tried to get Vortex installed for about an hour and then gave up.
So, multiple launchers are kind of a pain in the butt.
It was awesome that GOG updated their launcher to natively connect to competitor's platforms. And their stance against DRM is still admirable.
But, I have to use something like Heroic on my Steam Deck because Steam has no intention of making it easier to connect to other platforms from their hardware.
Not sure what my point was. Maybe that it should be easier to just buy games one time and then easily play it wherever you want forever.
