The #Voyager1 spacecraft took photos in 1979 on #ThisDayInHistory that proved the existence of #volcanoes on #Io, the innermost of the four #GalileanMoons of #Jupiter. Proximity to #Europa & #Ganymede force an orbital eccentricity that then creates tidal heating of Io's interior.
Many moons of the Outer Planets have subsurface oceans, suggesting possible life & habitability. On #ThisDayInHistory in 1998, the #Galileo mission showed #Europa has a salty ocean. #Ganymede & #Enceladus are now confirmed to have them; #Titan, #Callisto, & #Triton are likely.

βœ¨πŸ” New observations of #Ganymede πŸŒ–reveal a surprising similarity between the #auroras 🌌 on the #SolarSystem's largest #moon and those on #Earth 🌍. A team of space physicists has obtained new results suggesting that the fundamental physical processes that generate auroras are common to different celestial bodies.

Today's Flickr photo with the most hits was taken in Naples' Archaeology Museum: Zeus (in the form of an eagle) and Ganymede.

πŸͺ· On 29 Jan, we commemorate the discovery in 131 AD of the #StarOfAntinous. #Hadrian saw a new star in #Ganymede constellation, which was renamed for #Antinous. #AntoniusSubia offers this meditation on the meaning of the Star of #Antinous for us today: https://antinousstars.blogspot.com/2026/01/the-sacred-star-of-antinous.html πŸͺ·
πŸͺ· On 29 January 131 AD #Hadrian discovered the Star of Antinous. Comet? Supernova? No one knows. We know only that he renamed the #Ganymede constellation for #Antinous. In fixed-star astrology, the #StarOfAntinous must be located at 21 degrees #Capricorn: https://www.antinopolis.org/hernestus/fixedstarantinous.html πŸͺ·
πŸͺ· On 21 Jan, the Sun enters #Aquarius, sign of the Cupbearer. #Antinous was called the new #Ganymede because both were from Asia Minor, and both were swept to lofty heights. The Constellation of #Ganymedes was renamed for #Antinoos. Full details here: https://antinousstars.blogspot.com/2026/01/the-assumption-of-ganymede.html πŸͺ·

7 Jan 1610: Galileo Galilei spots 4 'stars' near #Jupiter #otd.

He deduces some days later they are the moons now known as: #Ganymede, #Callisto, #Io, #Europa
