#Toothday#Halloween edition 🐲🎃🤪☠️ (and rabbit hole edition)

I found this photo by accident earlier today. I took it in 2019 at the newly opened #HausDerBayerischenGeschichte in #Regensburg, a museum dedicated to the history and culture of #Bavaria.

It's the head of #Tradinno the #dragon (lovingly called Fanny by the locals), who is the star of the #FurtherDrachenstich or "Slaying the dragon" play – #Germany's oldest local #theatre play, which has taken place in the town of #FurthImWald since 1590. Of course, this dragon isn't 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 old – this model has been drawing the crowds since 2010. It was featured in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's largest walking robot. Remote-operated by four people, Tradinno is 15.5 metres (50 ft) long and 4.5 metres (15 ft) high, weighs 11 tonnes, and boasts 140 horsepower. It moves around, displays facial expressions, carries 80 litres of stage blood, and can spread its wings to an impressive 12-metre (39 ft) wingspan. It also spits fire over 5 metres (16 ft) and roars. Aaaand is slain by the newly-knighted Udo year after year, the poor thing.
The spectacle takes place in August and features hundreds of performers. When it's not busy being slain, the dragon resides in a "dragon cave" in #Furth, where it welcomes visitors eager to learn more about #dragons, #animatronics, and the famous play.

The #HdBG museum only displays a life-size replica of the dragon's head, complete with 36 sharp #teeth, but I applaud their level of detail! 🤭

Edit: If you want to see the dragon in action, another user posted a video under #FurtherDrachenstich!

rest day at the Trans Bayerwald Tour 2024
I didn't want to spend my rest day sitting in the hotel, so I looked into what aside from shopping I could do.
During my planning I briefly read about the "Drachenstich" (slaying of the dragon) of Furth im Wald. As I found out, it is the oldest german folk play with 400 years of it being performed. Turns out there is a permanent exhibition about it in the "dragon cave" and even better on my rest day, there would be one of the rare live performances of the dragon itself outside of the play.
The exhibition covers the history of the "Further Drachenstich", the evolution of the dragon from leather covered wooden carts with pape rmaché head to the present day largest four legged walking robot at 11t, 5m high, 15,5m long and with a wing span of 12m lovingly called Fanni.
The play itself also changed over time and of course there was a collage of all the knights and damsels from the last 100 or so years.
During the show they presented each of Fanni's controllable features from the snout to the tail tip including the breathing of fire and the "bleeding" for the fight with the knight.
The show concluded with an automated sequence where the dragon is portrait as the guardian of fire and protector of men.
What a treat.
