With a nearly $50 billion corporate tax giveaway on the table, Trump’s latest tax proposal is a massive handout to the wealthiest corporations at the expense of working families. Trump’s plan would slash the corporate tax rate to just 15%, resulting in a combined $48 billion in annual tax breaks for the 100 largest U.S. corporations. Big corporations like Amazon and Walmart, which are already reporting record profits, are set to reap massive rewards. Amazon alone would pocket $2.5 billion annually under this plan, while grocery giants like Kroger, Walmart, and Costco would collectively save $1.7 billion in taxes, despite high grocery prices for families across the country. If enacted, Trump’s tax proposal would have devastating consequences. For context, the corporate tax cuts for just 10 corporations, including Amazon, Walmart, and JPMorgan Chase, would cost more than twice what the federal government spends annually on cancer and Alzheimer’s research. We’ve seen this before. The 2017 Trump tax scam slashed corporate tax rates, fueling a $1 trillion surge in stock buybacks that further enriched executives and shareholders while workers saw only stagnant wages. Now Trump wants to repeat these mistakes on an even larger scale, with working families paying the price. For too long, corporations and the ultra-wealthy have exploited a rigged tax system to avoid paying their fair share. Instead of addressing these inequities, Trump’s plan doubles down on tax breaks for the wealthiest companies at the expense of the schools, healthcare, and infrastructure that families rely on.
