The Inter-American Court on Human Rights (IACHR) ruled on 5 March upholding the case of Celia Ramos Durand against the Peruvian state. Business forum takes place with key presidential candidates absent #Peru #Wahlen2026
The annual CADE event took place this week (4-6 November) in Lima with business executives seeking to set their agenda for the forthcoming presidential and congressional elections. However, some key candidates – perhaps not wishing to be seen as the preferred candidates of the business elite – declined the invitation. They included Keiko #Fujimori, César Acuña, and Carlos Alvarez.

This week the Constitutional Tribunal (TC) pronounced on the so-called ‘cocktails case’, exonerating Keiko Fujimori of blame and shelving all the accusations against her. Other politicians accused of receiving illicit handouts from Odebrecht and other Brazilian construction companies, including Ollanta Humala and Susana Villarán, hope to benefit from this legal precedent.

Seit 2016 stellt sich in #Peru die Frage der Regierbarkeit. 2016 wurde Pedro Pablo Kuczynski zum Präsidenten gewählt. Die Partei Fuerza Popular, deren Präsidentschaftskandidatin Keiko #Fujimori in der Stichwahl gegen Kuczynski verlor, errang im Kongress 73 von 130 Sitzen.

Her removal came after a spike in organized crime including extorsions, many dead "transportistas" (bus drivers etc), and a recent attack on the band #aguamarina . As many politicians and police officials are suspected to be directly involved, it seems unlikely that this change in leadership would bring a fast end to the violent crime but rather it is feared that parties like #fuerzapopular with the daughter of ex-dictator #fujimori might take advantage to undermine democracy in #peru (3/3)

On 20 May, Vladimiro Montesinos reached the age of 80. According to legislation passed last year and promulgated in December by President Dina Boluarte, prisoners who reach 80 can be released from jail and serve their sentences under conditions of house arrest. Montesinos’ lawyers plan to use this to demand the release of their client.

First forced sterilisation case to be heard by Inter-American Court
The Inter-American Court of Human Rights will hold a public hearing next week on the case of Celia Ramos, a 34-year-old woman from #Piura who died in 1997 after being forcibly sterilised as part of former president Alberto #Fujimori ’s National Reproductive Health and Family Planning Programme. Her case is the first forced sterilisation case from #Peru to appear before the Court. #Menschenrechte

On 14 May, President Dina Boluarte ratified almost the entire cabinet following the resignation of Gustavo #Adrianzén as prime minister. The new prime minister is Eduardo #Arana, the former justice minister who is one of Boluarte’s most loyal shield-bearers. He is also thought to be close to Keiko #Fujimori.
