Fuck man, the A's.

I wasn't around for a lot of the glory days, but even over the last decade and change I've been keeping up they have fielded some FUN teams. Ownership is trash ofc and the Coliseum is a lovable dump, but I'm grateful for all of the good times I had there growing up. I was always so excited to tell people that my great uncle factored in on those amazing teams in the late 80s, and it was awesome to go catch a game for like sub 20 dollars after work back when my office was located in Oakland.

The town and the fans deserve so much better than this. I know this isn't the final chapter for baseball in Oakland.

Goodbye A's...you were last team I kind of cared about...that was a decade ago when you use to try to be competitive. I stopped watching all professional sports years ago, football was the easiest; after they black balled Kaepernick, I couldn't stomach sitting next to one of those shut up and play dick heads less I be confused for one...

The drawbridge was up and I had to wait until it went down while listening to the beginning of Gibson's time at bat. Luckily Gibson was at bat for quite a while, got to 3-2 just as I was pulling into my grandparents driveway and I ran inside just in time to catch what was, until Shohei Otani's recent 50-50, the greatest play of my baseball fandom: Kirk Gibson's walk off home run to win the game. https://youtu.be/N4nwMDZYXTI?feature=shared

Even my Grandpa was impressed.

He was so excited by it and somehow this got back to his friends who knew the A's broadcasters and they talked about his birthday and the card on air!

On October 15, 1988 I was driving to my grandparents house in Alameda, listening to game 1 of the World Series between his beloved A's and my beloved Dodgers. I got to the High Street bridge, a drawbridge, just as they announced Kirk Gibson to pinch hit at the bottom of the ninth with two outs, Dodgers behind by one run.

I'm sad about the As leaving Oakland. The As were never my team but my grandfather, who was born in SF and moved to Alameda when my dad was a kid, was a lifelong fan. He played semi-pro ball himself for three or four years.

In mid-80s I was flipping through baseball cards at a collectible show and found his baseball card from his time with the San Francisco Mission Reds, part of the Pacific Coast league. It was just before his 75th BDay and this is what I gave him.
