Conservatives seem particularly adept at taking advantage of people’s ignorance of institutions that don’t obviously serve us in the day-to-day. Most people don’t think about conservation, let alone the organizations managing it, so it’s an easy place to chip away at to help your donors profit without the public noticing or pushing back.
Doug Ford is particularly good at this. Lefty people get up in arms, but I can imagine most people asking “who cares?” When your province is done being chopped up and sold off, you still can’t afford a home, your neighbourhoods are flooding and your children all have asthma from pollution, you might care. But it’s hard to explain the negative repercussions of this to most people who are tired, struggling to pay for groceries, and frustrated with problems closer to home.
