Jumalan valitsema neito Poppy kapinoi kaitsijoitaan vastaan luikahtamalla välillä pois heidän ulottuviltaan parantamaan kansaa tai harjoittelemaan taistelutaitoja. Uusi henkivartija Hawke saa hänet kyseenalaistamaan roolinsa.

From Blood and Ash was a fairly cliche romantasy read. Took me a good while to hop on to the plot. Still, captivating. Have you read it yet?

What’s your current #BookishEra ???

I’m in my #Romantasy Era for sure! It’s been a while since I caved to the hype of romantasy, but since I finished Onyx Storm, I’m living for the comfort of the genre. Started rereading the From Blood and Ash books in hopes to get caught up with that series AND its spin-off.

Deadline

20th finished book of the year: A Soul of Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout

2 ⭐️ - This was.. a filler episode made compulsory. I skipped through most of it.

I thought we’d mostly rid ourselves of ‘re-write the start of the story from the guy’s perspective’ as a book plot back in the days of Twilight, but clearly Armentrout thought there was still some value in it. I really can’t say that I agree in this case - an expansion on what Casteel (MMC) was doing during the events of the first book doesn’t appreciably add interesting context to the story as a whole, and with the last book ending in a massive cliffhanger, this feels almost torturous.

The ‘past’ chapters make up about 90% of the book, with ‘present’ chapters peppered throughout that mainly consist of Casteel sitting next to Poppy’s bedside talking to her about what happened in the ‘past’ chapters. There’s context given to this, he’s helping her get her memory back, and that’s cute, of course, but it’s not very INTERESTING. There’s one very brief fight, and a few interactions with other characters, but in all honestly I’d recommend skipping this book and just reading a summary online.

It’s disappointing to have to say all this, because the first three books were excellent.

19th finished book of the year: The War of Two Queens by Jennifer L. Armentrout

4.5 ⭐️ - As the focus of the series continues to narrow down, we get a deeper understanding of character history and some revelations that continue to shift the power balance.

So you thought Poppy was special and she basically doubled in specialness last book? Well hold on to your hats, because in a manner that would make Mario proud, she is getting more powerful again. I have to shake my head and smile, because this felt somewhat predictable - each of the prior books had ended with a big revelation and this one is no different.

This isn’t to say that it was in any way boring, or lacked in the political intrigue, interesting histories, and fun character interactions that have made the books entertaining thus far. The strong found family themes continue to be one of my favourite things about this series (I think we can firmly say this is my favourite romantasy trope at this point) with a good amount of attention given to making sure most of the important characters get adequate focus.

The romance takes an.. interesting angle.. with lines being blurred in a way that had been hinted at, but I hadn’t really expected to actually happen. The relationship between the two main characters is still very much the core, with the POV shifting characters codifying this, but I can’t honestly say that I can predict one way or the other how things will progress following this new development.

All in all, it’s another very entertaining addition to the series!

18th finished book of the year: The Crown of Gilded Bones by Jennifer L. Armentrout

4.5 ⭐️ - The series continues to expand, focussing less on the larger world building and more on the specific characters now that things are well established. Still just as entertaining and interesting as the first two.

If you thought that our heroine was already special, well wait! Turns out she’s at least twice as special as we initially thought. Finding out that our main character is actually the long-lost queen is not an unfamiliar concept to a Sim fan - it’s practically expected in fact. It’s also not strange to find out that she’s uncommonly powerful, but it’s starting to feel almost silly how she’s levelling up each book.

The political intrigue and battle between perceived good and evil escalates significantly, with a feeling of our little group being constantly embattled, suffering losses and setbacks. In this way, it’s kept constantly evolving and it doesn’t feel as if (despite being super special and powerful) there’s an easy path to victory for them.

Overall, despite the constant escalation, there’s a lot of found family forming, and a number of really touching moments between the members of the inner circle. I continue to find this series super engaging and I’m going to be sad when I reach the last current book!

17th finished book of the year: The Kingdom of Flesh and Fire by Jennifer L. Armentrout

(I’m actually 25 books in at this point, just reading a fair bit faster than I’m posting currently, haha)

4.75⭐️ - Just as engaging and entertaining as the first, with enough twists and turns to keep things interesting too.

If there’s an overarching theme to the Blood and Ash books so far, it’s this: “Think our heroine is special? Well you don’t know the half of it!”. It’s almost funny at times how flabbergasted the characters are as they discover that while they initially assumed one thing about her, they’ve now realised they were only partially right.

As the party of characters expands and we see more of the world through Poppy’s eyes, we get to experience her adjusting to the fact that all she ever knew was a lie. In this way, the world building is introduced naturally as she is learning it for herself, which was something I really enjoyed.

If the first book had a pinch of spice, this one has a spoonful. To say that the main characters are constantly horny for each other feels like an understatement and at times it feels like an almost gratuitous number of pages devoted to describing this. There’s also a considerable lack of boundaries shown, with a level of ‘I don’t care who is listening’ that would make me cringe in real life.

That said, I can’t claim this probably isn’t an accurate representation of a young new couple, albeit one in this instance where one party is over two hundred years old. It’s easy to forget that there’s an age difference though, given how they interact - maybe it’s just a given that be them fae, vampire, or Atlantian, long-lived fantasy males never grow up.

16th finished book of the year: From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout

5/5⭐️ - Was it perfect? No. Does it have issues. Sure. However I can’t give it less than five because I honestly loved every imperfect page of it.

I was thoroughly entranced by the world building and the way in which everything pulled together through this book. The relationships between the characters and, the MC’s insecurities about them, spoke to the life experience she was described as having. There are very few passages passing before we find out that she’s the most special, chosen by the gods, person around - which would usually be turn off. Even by badass heroine romantasy standards this is a lot of specialness to heap on in such a small number of pages. However, the way it’s used to describe her circumstances, how being put on a pedestal is not such a great thing at all in this context, is a big part of what made the relationships interesting.

The romance is very much an immediate attraction, but slow to action, kind of thing. There’s a relatively small pinch of spice, but it’s all condensed into a small number of pages, leading it to be pretty damn raunchy. Having previously read all the current The Serpent and the Wings of Night books, I was well acclimatised to the ‘blood sucking = basically absorbing refined pheromones’ trope and so wasn’t much shocked by it. If you’re not into that, just be aware that it’s definitely a major feature in those spicier moments.

I won’t pretend that I didn’t see the big reveal coming, but it was a slow enough of a realisation so as to find the eventual revelation a “aha, I knew it!” moment rather than a “ugh, so obvious”.

I can’t fail to mention that it was incredibly jarring having Masadonia used as a name of a country in the book. It’s rare that I’ll see a fantasy author use a real place, and I really wish those that did.. didn’t.
