In BioShock there's a condition temporarily inflicted upon the player character in which his arsenal of 'plasmid' superpowers becomes "unstable" (i.e. he periodically deploys a randomly selected one whether he wants to or not) and this has clear similarities to the Cutie Pox contracted by Apple Bloom, which as I recall makes it VERY clear in the show that having a "Cutie Mark" seems to be analogous to having some particular special ability. Makes you think don't it

Over on my blog, @vextaur I've done MLP story reviews, and lets try one here and see if'n Markdown can make it look good. For today, we're doing two stories we don't like, because it makes little point only being a cheerleader, right?

First off, The White-Tail Affair.

Honestly I hate to dislike this one, because the supporting cast is actually interesting and fun, Blueblood is… Odd, and I'm curious what's going on with him. Raven, even weirder, and Goody Two-Shoes the pegasus lawyer is fun… Unfortunately our main character Eterna Blossom is just a train wreck that drags the story down which really sucks with so many interesting and/or good characters running around.
What's the story about?
Well so far a diplomatic mission with the deer that live near the Everfree. So far because we've had a glimpse of a future where they're studying what went wrong I think, plus there's plenty of references to Eterna's family history which is tied to Nightmare Moon and the Everfree Forest. Seriously, I find myself being pretty sure there's a lot going on that I have figured out yet, but that's not a bad thing. Really its a shame about this one.

So what's the second one?

This is another potential squandered by a basically unlikable lead. Seriously, we have a person who's pulled into Friendship is Magic (My Little Pony generation 4) from the 80's via magic. Suspending disbelief that Twilight could do this without Celestia noticing, this is an interesting idea because typically human in Equestria stories are just that, or the human died and is reborn and is familiar with G4, but here the character is only vaguely aware of My Little Pony and that would be the first cartoon version, along with being converted into a pony when he was pulled in. Problem is that Andy isn't very likeable, survivor of an abusive childhood that ran off to CA to become a rock star, alcoholic and a drug user. This character sabotages himself at every opportunity, and while I'm glad there's no miracle cures in this Equestria, there doesn't seem to be any cures or help available. Because of this, things never really move forward, 7 chapters in, and really nothing has changed, things have happened, but nothing has really changed.

Seriously, the fact that I gave up on both of these is telling, I can put up with characters, settings or versions of Equestria that aren't entirely likeable, I mean I'm still reading Ascension, Abdication or Abduction, a story that I can say has its moments, the good parts out number the bad, but it definitely has issues.
Both of these though?
Yeah, definitely thumbs down, don't waste your time.

Shocked to see I haven't reviewed this one yet

Maybe I commented about it somewhere, but its not in a post, so lets talk about The Education of Sunset Shimmer.

If you'd asked me back in October about this one, I would've said one of the best written Sunset Shimmer meets Twilight stories, but still just another one of those stories, but its really hit its stride. Not only is Sunset much better written than canon, not just the arrogant student of Princess Celestia who dove through a mirror into another dimension when she didn't get what she wanted, this one is a teenager with what that brings, angry about the Princess not being her real mom, and as we see about when this really starts getting good, an inferiority complex. Yes, this Sunset is a real person, one that runs into Twilight, and realizes that the system is failing her. When she asks a Professor for help getting Twilight into Celestia's school, its pass admission day, and Twilight is too young, the Professor puts a price on his sponsoring her, Sunset will have to be her official mentor. She's been teaching Twilight and Moondancer, but make that official? She does decide to do it, but struggles with the choice. Things really got good in the last chapter, canon Twilight hatches a dragon egg, something the fandom has generally assumed was an impossible task to see how the student handles failure, here that's unquestionably the case as Twilight examines the egg and realizes its a rock. When she points this out, she's told she wasn't brought here to identify it, but to hatch it, that's the test. Could you be more blatant? And umm,

Yeah, this one is looking real interesting, assuming the author keeps this quality up, I have to wonder where they're going, will this just go on for the entire show, stop at some point only for there to be another story, or...? Seriously, if you like Sunset or young Twilight, you really need to read this one.

While I'm here, let me point out another good one, Twilight's Me Time. Originally a one off, the fans demanded it continue, so it has. Nothing real deep here, SciTwi (EQG) decides since she's board, she'll spend summer break with Princess Twilight in Equestria. Two nerds that have a habit of experimenting first and thinking second, what could possibly go wrong? Yeah, this is just a silly thing, easy reading, but definitely a fun read.
