🌺Livia’s Garden Villa Fresco🐝

Some #FrescoFriday’s require revisiting the glorious artistry of the frescoes from Livia’s villa. Abundance and control are both on full display in this fresco which reflect the ideals emphasised by the Augustan regime.

✨Dionysus was interested in seafood?✨

This is part of the recently uncovered House of Thiasos at Pompeii which is covered in sprawling and near life sized portraits of followers of Dionysus including Silenus (seen here with a young lady). But it seems that the veneration of Dionysus would be incomplete indeed without some fine marine creatures!

✨Let the feast begin!✨

Start #FrescoFriday and the weekend right with a good feast and a relax. Hair nets and drinking horns optional, but recommended!

For #FrescoFriday a #Roman wall painting from the Casa dei Cervi, Herculaneum, depicting Cupids playing hide and seek.

I especially like the one who covers his eyes - some things haven't changed since Roman times!

In Roman wall painting of the 1st c. AD, scenes depicting Cupid in everyday activities were very popular. The fresco dates 50/60 AD. Now at Museo Archeologico Nazionale.

✨The concern of Silenus✨

Hopefully your Friday goes better than Silenus’! Known to move in the circles of Dionysus, Silenus is an older satyr who has maybe seen a little more than he’d like…

✨Dancing with Apollo✨

This stunning Roman fresco comes from the Villa Moregine which is located just outside Pompeii. The figure wears gorgeous diaphanous robes in blues and seems to float against the red background while strumming a lyre.

For a belated #SaveTheElephantDay 🐘 on a #FrescoFriday: love the cheeky expression on this elephant’s face! A lovely surviving detail from the murals of Ellora Cave 16, aka the Kailāśa Temple in Maharashtra, India. This Hindu cave temple, carved from a single massive rock in the 8th century, is the largest monolithic structure in the world.

✨Riot at the arena!✨

This fresco depicts a riot at the arena in Pompeii. The fresco likely depicts the riot that broke out in 59 CE between Pompeians and the neighbouring Nucerians. When news of the riots reached Rome, the emperor Nero banned events at the arena for a decade! Today this fresco can be seen at the MAN Napoli.
