Thank you, Andrew Gounardes, Harry Bronson, and all legislative backers. Thank you, Gov. Hochul. (And thank you, Illinois and Gov. Pritzker, for taking the lead!)

NY Governor Hochul Signs the Freelance Isn't Free Bill into Law!

We urge Gov. Hochul to sign New York’s now twice-passed Freelance Isn’t Free Act — and to provide the leadership ensuring that it and all protections secured in law for the state’s workers will be enforced.

As of yesterday, New York’s #FreelanceIsntFree bill has passed in both houses of the state legislature — AGAIN. They’ve passed the same bill, handily, two years in a row.

Gov. Hochul does not need to veto the bill twice, she needs to hear the people’s voice and sign it into law.

The protections are basic: every freelancer deserves the right to a written contract, to be paid on time, and to be free from retaliation.

Thursday this week, June 1, Freelance Solidarity Project members in New York go to Albany to rally, meet with state officials, and demand that Freelance Isn’t Free become law throughout the state.

Both houses passed the bill handily last year — and the governor vetoed it. That can’t stand.

June 1 | NWU/FSP Lobby Day in Albany for Freelance Isn't Free!

The Freelance Isn’t Free Act is common-sense legislation that gives freelancers basic improvements to their working conditions. Under the law, freelancers will be guaranteed the right to a written contract, payment within 30 days, and protection against retaliation. Freelance Isn’t Free passed the New York State legislature in 2022 with an overwhelming margin, but Governor Kathy Hochul decided to veto the bill at the last minute—a slap in the face of freelancers statewide, especially as layoffs force more and more workers across media into the precarity of freelancing. Join NWU-FSP and our coalition allies as we rally in Albany to demand that Governor Hochul fix her mistake and sign Freelance Isn't Free. There will be transportation from NYC to Albany and back, as well as lunch (and camaraderie). Participating in Lobby Day is a powerful way to show solidarity with your freelancer comrades. And it's going to be fun, too!
