My first hens came from a battery farm and I promised to keep them free range now they lived with me. Only one of those original girls left, but I'm still committed to #FreeRange birds.
Even when egg hunts look like this.
Still 2 nests to find.

Im sick with a headache and a cough.
And every time I cough, #ReddicaRooster looks at me like wtf? Was that a challenge? Don't think I won't fight you! I'M Topcock here, actually!
And then he starts doing his whole fucking range of sounds. If you've not spent time with a rooster, you might be surprised by their range. I certainly was.
Shortly after him asserting himself vocally, the other 4 fucking roosters onsite suffer a hormonal compulsion to respond.
And so on and so on to a fucking crescendo contorting my brain, I usually enjoy these guys' noises but not today. Wow. Fuck a doodle do
Really enjoying the springtime vibes - birds chirping, frosts mild, noon being the best time to be outside, only a few sandflies, buds on the trees, hens laying...
Would it be weird to get gps for the hens?
I know I deliberately didn't get a video monitor for bubs cos surveillance culture yuck, but...
On one hand, we could use that information to find their nests! They have vastly expanded their roaming range since having a few broods of chicks last summer. They go all the way to the gate and down to the shelter belt beyond the fence (which only stops cattle - even the ram had points he just squeezed between -very slack wires).
On the other hand, imagine all that data plotted onto maps and graphs! 🤩 At this point, the free ranging crew consist of Claudia and Soup, 2 grown red laying hens, Douglas,a little black game hen, Clover, the only hen in the second brood, who looks much like her mother (Douglas) but with hybrid vigour, fucking massive. Then there's the new brood coming through. 2 definite males, 2 definite females, jury's out on the third. This brood came through with lots of red and strawberry blonde shades, some pretty hens.
I'd so love to see all their different movements mapped out

The Omnivore's Deception | John Sanbonmatsu
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZq5KknPrN8
"The meat industry and its defenders promise ethical consumption and sustainable farming, but animal agriculture fuels ecological destruction, entrenches human supremacy, and masks cruelty with comforting myths. John Sanbonmatsu, philosopher and author of The Omnivore’s Deception, shatters the myths of “humane meat” and the 'naturalness' of eating meat, and explains why abolishing the animal economy is essential to living an ethical human life.
