Article just published last week (open access) with Monika Maciejewska & Wojciech Kębłowski:
We explore the geography of fare-free #PublicTransport (#FFPT) in the United States: 259 urban #transit agencies (out of 400) suspended fares during the first 2 years of the Covid-19 pandemic.
At the end of 2021, more than 73 of them had kept free fares, on top of 29 that had existed before 2020.

Another positive of Queensland's 50 cent fares is that I don't have to bike all 15 km to work, if for whatever reason (health/time/weather etc), I can't/don't want to, on any given day, and I don't have to use PT all the way. I can skip the bus part, leave home 10 minutes later, ride the bike 5 km to the station, pay $0.50, get on a train with my bike, and still make it to the office about 10 minutes earlier if I rode the whole way.
