Texas can require public schools to display the Ten Commandments

A U.S. appeals court says Texas can require the Ten Commandments to be displayed in public school classrooms. The ruling Tuesday by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals was a victory for conservatives who have long sought to incorporate more religion into schools. The ruling sets up a potential clash at the U.S. Supreme Court over the issue in the future. The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals said in the decision that Texas’ law did not violate the First Amendment, which protects religious freedom and prevents the government from establishing a religion. Critics have said the law violates the separation of church and state.

I grew up in religious day school and sent our kids to (a different) religious day school—I know as well as anybody how expensive it is to be #Jewish and raise Jewish kids. We need to fix that.

Wanna know was ISN'T the answer?

Federal funding for religious schools

The destruction of the #EstablishmentClause, and the revisionist transformation of the #FreeExerciseClause from shield to sword will destroy the broadly accepted status quo in this country. Every kid gets a free #education if they like; or, if they prefer, they may choose non-public options at their own cost. That way I don't have to subsidize (well, directly at least) some kid's Catholic school, and they don't have to subsidize my kids' Jewish day school.

What made this country so attractive for my ancestors (and those of tens of millions of others) was precisely the promise that the US wouldn't treat us differently based on our religion. Lose that, and you lose the essence of this nation.

Supreme Court Seems Open to a Religious Charter School in Oklahoma

The justices have allowed vouchers for religious schools and required equal treatment in tuition programs. But direct government payments to religious public schools pose a new test.
