Labyrinths Borne

My first work for Professor LatinX! Labyrinths Borne is a 82-page graphic novel created and written by Frederick Aldama with artwork by Itzel Aguilar, inks by Nicky Rodriguez and colors & lettering by me.

In last decade I’ve been lucky to work on comic books with 80 or more pages, I’m glad to be hired to work on more than one task (color, lettering, design, and sometimes, editorial design) this way I can focus for months on a single project, I love it.

For color, I get out from my comfort zone ready to play with brushes, tones and colors that fit much better with Itzel artwork style. For lettering, I chose Spinner Rack Pro by Blambot, a font made to be readable at tiny sizes, this is a comic book with some long text bodies and readability is a must. Paperboy and Astounder Round (also by Blambot) were used for captions and a paragraph was set in Maiola in a try to emulate a close-up to a “real” book page and Playpen Sans for the cover bullet (both by TypeTogether). Frederick also asks for title logo design:

Capital “O” was replaced with a maze (made it from scratch) also used as a graphic design element. This is a plain version I did just for the book spine:

Cover, first pages & synopsis

The future of humanity hangs in the balance as black ice emerges in summer and a mysterious disease threatens to wipe swaths of the population from the planet. But there is hope in the hands of the surviving youth, living in a bunker at the edge of the world, as they use science and the arts to open new pathways towards eco-harmony and collective possibility.
