"#TheLastHonestMan": #JamesRisen on How Former Senator #FrankChurch Exposed #CIA, #FBI & #NSA

November 1975 #ChurchCommittee

@samohTmaS Joe Biden is a very skilled politician. I wish he would channel Frank Church more (environment and peace). It's worth reading "The Last Honest Man" by James Risen about #FrankChurch to note the relationship of Church and #Biden

“The United States must not adopt the tactics of the enemy. Means are as important as ends. Crisis makes it tempting to ignore the wise restraints that make men free, but each time we do, each time the means we use are wrong, our inner strength, the strength which makes us free, is lessened.” #FrankChurch

Frank Church - Wikipedia

Risen attributes the past twenty years’ revival of Church’s reputation to Dick Cheney’s constant refrain that what thwarted the Bush torture program was the FISA result of Church committee investigation of the CIA assassination program begun by Allan Dulles during the Eisenhower administration. Church was supportive to newly elected Senator Joe Biden on early family loss. Oh what tangled webs we weave when first we practice to deceive! #ChurchCommittee #FrankChurch #FISA #CIA #TheLastHonesMan
Finished this while we were on the Washington coast around August 23. Thought I had posted a review: inspiring, thorough. I don’t read a lot of biography: this is a political one of a most interesting US Senator: Frank Church, yes of #ChurchCommittee renown. Risen assesses Church’s influence has only increased since his death at 59 in 1984, especially the legacy of investigating US intelligence culture and the ultimate #ForeignIntelligenceSurveillanceAct and the creation of #FISA #FrankChurch
"The Last Honest Man": James Risen on How Former Senator Frank Church Exposed CIA, FBI & NSA

Veteran national security reporter James Risen joins us for an in-depth look at his new book, The Last Honest Man, about the work of Senator Frank Church to rein in the FBI, CIA and other agencies after the Vietnam War, Watergate and other fiascos had shaken the public's trust in the U.S. government. Church, a Democrat, chaired a Senate committee that in 1975 began investigating the intelligence community and uncovered numerous abuses, including assassination plots and widespread domestic surveillance. Risen's book also includes new details about Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg's previously unknown role in the work of the committee. "The Church Committee, I think, is probably the most important congressional investigation in modern American history," says Risen, who says it marked a "before and after" in U.S. national security policy and helped to limit abuses by the government in the decades that followed.
