Operations — Slow but consistent progress continues on the France Canyon Fire. The infrared flight still shows heat in the Badger Creek and Kings Creek Campground, so firefighters are focusing their suppression efforts in that area, hoping to gain more containment in the next few shifts.
The closure order was updated this morning by the Dixie National Forest. The fire area remains closed, along with some surrounding areas where heavy equipment and firefighters are still working. While East Fork Road (087) is now open, everything west of it remains closed…The closure will continue to be evaluated frequently between the Incident Management Team and the local Forest Service office. The fire area itself will likely remain closed for a longer period of time. Forest Closure Order & Map
Heavy equipment is working on the north and east flanks of the fire perimeter to repair these areas, and minimize long term impacts from fire suppression. Firefighters are working closely with the BAER (Burned Area Emergency Response) Team to identify areas of high impact to help prevent further issues, such as flooding and erosion...
Weather – A high pressure system is in the area. There continues to be a warming trend predicted through the weekend. Daytime relative humidity is between 12-16%. Temps will increase to the upper mid 80s.
Today, there will be a brief break in rain and thunderstorms in the early morning before chances of showers and thunderstorms return and continue through the early evening. These storms will be more wet in nature and could produce flash flooding.
A warming trend will begin Friday with increasing temperatures and daytime relative humidities dropping back into the teens. However, overnight recoveries will take a few days to decrease, remaining in the mid 30-40% through the weekend. Chances of wetting rain, as well as thunderstorm risks, diminish after Friday with only 5-10% chances for lingering showers and 5-15% chances for thunderstorms.

July 3 morning update from Dixie National Forest:
Total Acres: 33,364 - Containment: 66%
Operations –Today, crews will continue patrolling for areas of heat in the interior and conduct mop up as needed. Suppression repair crews will continue mastication and dozer line repair on the fire perimeter. With continued monsoonal influence on the weather, crews remain on alert for flash flooding and potential impacts from lightning.
Yesterday, crews completed mastication work around Blubber Creek then moved equipment to the Skunk Creek area to start repair work. All hose was backhauled from Johnson Canyon back to Incident Command Post for overhaul and release. Containment was achieved in the northwest corner between Johnson Canyon and Proctor Canyon. Crews continue to work towards containment in the southwest area of the fire perimeter. Crews are coordinating with Resource Advisors to determine the most effective ways to complete suppression repair to achieve long-term rehabilitation goals.
Weather – Yesterday afternoon, there were scattered showers with both wet and dry thunderstorms in the area. Lightning strikes and strong gusty outflow winds of 35 mph or greater occurred. The threat of gusty outflow winds decreased after sunset, but there is the possibility of light rain and thunderstorms continuing overnight into the early morning.
