Just a thought.

For people considering forks (and I am one of them), can we achieve our goal of better privacy and safety by taking all our effort and combining them towards the goal of improving an existing project like GoToSocial so that it can become compatible with Mastodon?

Is that a way forward?

#mastodon #fediverse #ForkOff #ForkOffTogether

@evemassacre Absolutely, and there seems to be a history of various folks trying to push collective governance of Mastodon. With only marginal gains (it's something, though). One key thing I only recently learned about: #ForkOff, the movement aka #forkofftogether
@er1n @geesehoward (I hate how I just remembered #ForkOffTogether, where they didn’t have any developers at all)
Snackiverse

@adam There was a big kerfuffle a while back and a few people were making a fork but it's kinda fizzled out AFAICT. Relevant hashtags were #forkoff, #forkofftogether, #forktogether

Should #ForkOffTogether consider working with and/or exchanging ideas & social field notes/findings with the Pleroma project?

I bet there are already people involved with both.

Regardless though the Fediverse continue to grow.

@scanlime yeah, I feel like portability between instances is a big target for improvement, right now it still feels pretty hard to just up and leave an instance.

I missed all of the #ForkOffTogether drama & as someone who just wandered in (and who has never had to run a large social network)—making a to disable *any* feature seems like it doesn't need to be debated at length. Maybe it's the cost of a single-controlling-entity being wrong in public. (I am sure I'd find it hard to deal with too).

Psst, if it wasn't obvious, this was mine and @sargoth 's idea throwing some of these temporary documents together for the first #ForkOffTogether meeting.

And I'm still not sure if it worked as intended, or not.

Anyways, I'm loving the transparent process I'm seeing from @Satsuma on this bylaws work now.
