Edward ChampionI'm rereading Ford Madox Ford's PARADE'S END for this Modern Library essay. And I truly cannot stand Tietjens. He is mind-numbingly insufferable: the worst kind of man imaginable. Humorless, Tory, hostile to any viewpoint other than his own, resentful of women and anybody even vaguely Bohemian, and, above all, predictable in his obduracy. I actually LIKE unlikeable protagonists, but Tietjens? Jesus Christ, what a boring and uninteresting prick. Not unlike a MAGA CHUD.

Rebecca West said of Ford Madox Ford that to embraced by him was "like being the toast under a poached egg." And yet this man got around in his forties and his fifties, undoubtedly buttressed by his reputation rather than any natural charms.
Ezra Pound's brutal assessment of Ford Madox Ford: "He kept on discovering merit with monotonous regularity." I feel this applies to at least 65% of literary critics today. There's a way to dispense praise with thought and class (see John Leonard) and there's a way to do so while coming across as a bumpkin and a fool.

Indeed, #MJohnHarrison, for you to stand next to #FordMadoxFord is an honor, and to be placed there by Mr Nighy gives that honour an extra unbookish twist. It goes both ways, of course: #BillNighy elevates himself (if that were possible) by his affection for FMF and MJH. Bravo all.
