I'm rereading Ford Madox Ford's PARADE'S END for this Modern Library essay. And I truly cannot stand Tietjens. He is mind-numbingly insufferable: the worst kind of man imaginable. Humorless, Tory, hostile to any viewpoint other than his own, resentful of women and anybody even vaguely Bohemian, and, above all, predictable in his obduracy. I actually LIKE unlikeable protagonists, but Tietjens? Jesus Christ, what a boring and uninteresting prick. Not unlike a MAGA CHUD.
