Antonelli, the youngest pole position holder in history
The 19-year-old driver from Emilia – 19 years, 6 months, and 18 days old – becomes the youngest pole position holder in history (beating Vettel’s record, who achieved pole at 21 years, 2 months, and 11 days) and brings Italy to first place in qualifying after almost 17 years: the last to achieve this was Giancarlo Fisichella with Force India at Spa 2009.
Second row for Ferrari
The 19-year-old Bolognese stopped the clock at 1'32"064, ahead of teammate George Russell by 0"222, slowed down by a gearbox problem and completing only one attempt in Q3. The second row is all Ferrari with Lewis Hamilton (+0"351) ahead of Charles Leclerc (+0"364). McLaren’s Oscar Piastri (+0"486) and Lando Norris (+0"544) follow. Pierre Gasly (Alpine), Max Verstappen (Red Bull), Isack Hadjar (Red Bull) and Oliver Bearman (Haas) complete the top ten.
Antonelli, a very clean session
It was a very clean session and I’m very happy. I can’t wait to start ahead of everyone in tomorrow’s race. I knew George (Russell, ed.) had a problem but I stayed calm.” These are the words of Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) after taking pole position in the Chinese Grand Prix, the second race of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship.
“I would like to bring Italy to the top step of the podium”
“I improved every time I went out on track. I’ll enjoy this pole a little, but I have to finish well tomorrow, and I’m aware of the opportunity I have. It would be great to bring Italy to the top step of the podium. The start procedure is good and I will have to do well at the start, which has been my weakness so far.” These are the words, on the microphones of Sky Sport, of Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) after taking pole position in the Chinese Grand Prix, the second race of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship.
