Drank the last of my #Nerada tablelands grown tea. No more "no nonsense" regular tea is grown in Australia, as Nerada now import everything and repackage it here. I'm not going with the random mixed-origin clear-cut-the-land-and-damned stuff if I can avoid it, especially as we do have a small local planting still clinging on.

Most food is transported by boat, so food miles are a relatively small part of the carbon footprint of most diets

Many people are interested in how they can eat in a more climate-friendly way. I’m often asked about the most effective way to do so.

Our World in Data

Climate disasters have extensive repercussions for food supply chains

"A study published in 2022, led by my colleagues at the University of Sydney, found that almost one-fifth of total emissions from global food systems were produced by transport and supporting services, such as distribution warehouses. This was equivalent to about 6% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.
Of course, greenhouse gas emissions are warming the climate and leading to worse and more frequent natural disasters. And, as another University of Sydney study showed, these disasters have extensive repercussions for the food industry. "

"When it comes to food distribution, will Australia expand gas and coal production as a purported answer to lower energy costs in the short term – or will we move swiftly to decarbonise the sector and buy more local, sustainable food?"

Yes, energy prices are hurting the food sector. But burning more fossil fuels is not the answer

Evidence suggests burning more coal and gas will damage many industries. So why are food distributors lobbying for more fossil fuels?

Bought some milbona Skyr from Lidl cost £1.25 EU (German) milk.

Arla Skyr £2.2 UK milk IIUC (Tesco price, but standard elsewhere).

Grahams Skyr £1.2 but it’s Scottish milk.

I think it’s important to support ‘local’ producers where possible. Even dairy giants. Not because of patriotic (or nationalistic) reasons. But energy for distribution should be lower…not to mention quality can be as good.

IIUC a lot of seasonal produce in stores are ‘local’. My oats & oat bars are local to. I wish it were easier to identify a products ‘food miles’. Where one’s other food originates matters.

Some light relief in a discussion on Instagram of the environmental impact of food.

I'm having a very special Hogmanay dinner of fillet steak. I can't remember the last time I had steak, we just don't buy it or go for it when dining out.

This is extra special as its given to me in return for some dry stone walling. It's from a Belted Galloway that was reared one field away. Purely grass fed, either on the hill or with silage harvested from the better fields by the Harwood Beck.

The taste is just out of this world. Happy New Year when it arrives. #FoodMiles
