I harvested some more #GreenOnions from our backyard.
2025 marks the 30th year since I bought green onions in any store. Been growing it, year round, since 1995.

To help me get through winter, I started growing a tomato plant like a house plant. Today, I grabbed the first tomato! 🍅
It’s certainly not high-producing(this was the only tomato ready), but I wasn’t even sure if it would get enough energy to produce any at all, so I am taking this as a win.

Got onions?
In late summer I always plant Walla Walla onion seed in our unheated mini greenhouse. There were several times this past winter when temps went down to the mid teens.
Yesterday I moved those onion plants those into one of our raised beds. If the forecast is for frost then I have a piece of 2-mil plastic I will drape over the bed on a temporary support system. These will be our first onions sometime this summer.
Also yesterday I planted 3 kinds of storage onion and more Walla Walla in the greenhouse. Some of this seed is from 2023 so if it does not germinate well then I will replant with 2024 seed.

Got coffin lids?
Recently I bought a tray of spinach starts and there were too many to plant in our mini greenhouse so the rest of them went into a raised bed. Then I got a coffin lid out of storage to put over the bed at night since here in the #PNW it can still freeze.
2x2 frame + concrete re-mesh wire + UV resistant plastic
Old garden hose was split lengthwise and put over the end of the wire to keep it from eating the plastic.
We have 2 cofffin lids and we made one a bit shorter so they kinda stack for storage.

Get ready. Get set. Start #gardening.
If you live in the greater Seattle area you likely know about McLendon Hardware stores. Yesterday I found early transplants at the Woodinville store and got some spinach and lettuce to plant in our mini-greenhouse.
Actually I planted spinach seed last fall to overwinter except some critter got in there and ate the plants - roots and all! 😟
At least that critter left the Walla Walla onions alone. They will get transplanted into another part of the garden in a few weeks.

Got spinach?
It is my turn to cook tonight so the menu will include some tasty fall spinach from our mini greenhouse. These plants will survive temps into the teens and produce our first garden-fresh produce next March.
Also in the pic are some Walla Walla onions. Next spring I will transplant these into a different part of the garden and they will be our first onions.
At the other end of the same greenhouse bed are hardy lettuce varieties to overwinter. But it looks like I planted too soon so I plan to plant more lettuce in the other greenhouse bed. Meanwhile, we have all the succulent tender lettuce we can eat.

Pole bean revival.
In early September it looked like our garden pole beans were done producing for the year. Turns out they were just taking a bit of a break. The daily yield is way down but it is still more than we can keep up with eating fresh. The plants are really beat up since I have been pawing through the leaves picking beans all season. But as long as the plants are producing, I will let them keep going.
