No #TOTP snark or even #folkSongs streaming from me tonight. I'm off to help celebrate a friend's fiftieth.

Pitchers and sandwiches

No sniveling milksop

In which a drinking song lookup leads to a lurid 18th century rabbit hole.

Not only am I enough of a geek to have scripts that use pandoc, Python, and bash to assemble a pub songbook in epub format (a pub epub, as it were), now those scripts can check which song files are unknown to git and put them in a "New songs this edition" list at the front.

Maybe everyone else knew about this a decade ago but the Vancouver Morris Men have a 170+ page songbook online:

Not all the songs are suitable for a capella pub singing (Dedicated Follower of Fashion for instance) but there's a lot that is. Tunes are up to you.

We Will Always Fight Back

YouTube

We've had a couple of rehearsals for the Easterley gig (that's Emily Eastwood and me singing unaccompanied folk songs in harmony) at Nether Edge Folk Club in Sheffield on the 28th of this month.

Good news: We still know all the songs
News: After months of not singing because of extensive dental work, my singing stamina isn't what it should be. I need more practice!

So tomorrow night, I will *definitely* be streaming folk songs on YouTube. Just me and #LoopyPro, as per usual.

The #TOTP pop picker aparters will just have to do without me.

Please enjoy this rocked–up version of a campaign song written for Lincoln’s presidential run.

Playing and singing this music made me feel hopeful and I hope some of that transmits to you through the music.

Any proceeds will be donated to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

... "tracing how folksong shaped Jewish life in Eastern Europe and how its meanings shifted through migration and memory. It also reflects on how the very act of interviewing contributed to the construction of the figure of the “Yiddish folksinger,” a powerful image that continues to shape how we understand Yiddish folksong today."

niche post incoming, but I was thinking of 2026 and one thing I'd love to do with is to come up with a concert of old Romanian and klezmer music from WWI-era NYC that I come across in my research. anyhow it got me thinking of this weird song that comes up in a few contexts, Hai la Raci, recorded here by Simon Paskal, a NY Yiddish recording artist who also recorded some Romanian discs.
