I have abandoned the internet, smartphones, credit cards, and computers. My brain isn’t overloaded, I truly live in the moment: John Foley’s radical choice.
An activity, no smartphone, no internet, and not even credit cards. This is the radical choice of John Foley, 38 years old, owner of a multi-award-winning nursery in Holden, a town in the United States, who decided to completely abandon technology to return to an “analog” working method, based solely on paper, pen, and direct contact with customers.
A decision that matured over time, culminating in a definitive break with the digital world. Foley explained to the Daily Star: “It was therapeutic and liberating; I feel as if I’ve regained control of my life, my mind, and my sense of fulfillment. My screen time was approximately 5 hours and 40 minutes a day, not an enormous amount, but I thought I was productive. In reality, I wasn’t, and I’ve now recovered that time. Not being constantly reachable by phone has slowed things down, and actually improved the quality of my life. My days seem four times longer, and I now truly live in the moment. My brain is able to think instead of always being overloaded. I no longer feel the need to fill every empty space with my phone.”
His choice began in 2023, when he stopped using his smartphone after finding it increasingly a source of distraction. “My last phone use was Tuesday, June 13, 2023,” he recounts. From there began a gradual process of detachment, fueled by two episodes that he himself describes as “life-changing.”
The first concerned a trip to London, during which he was working on the development of the “The Wonder Garden” app. “We missed the train because one of us had forgotten the charger. That evening, when we arrived at the rental house, I stayed up late writing messages. The next morning, I simply decided to do without it.”
The second episode was decisive for the final change. During a subsequent trip, he realized how much the phone was influencing his time and attention. “It wasn’t easy, but I discovered that I finally had time to talk to people, and worries about emails or messages could simply wait.”
From that moment on, Foley began to reduce technology even more, eventually arriving at a drastic choice: to eliminate computers, internet, and credit cards, opting for cash and traditional tools. Today he works with paper agendas, handwritten notes, and even a blackboard for organizing daily activities.

I've been incredibly busy of late and as a result very quiet but here's a little bit of work made by one of my mentees. We looked at foley work, trying to create sounds for silent film footage, using microphones and a random assortment of objects. All of the sound in this video has been "made"…I think he did a great job!
