#FlyBase release FB2025_04 is live. There's a couple of major changes in this release. First, we've added many new bulk files to the Downloads page. https://flybase.org/downloads/bulkdata (you can find descriptions of the contents and format of each file here https://wiki.flybase.org/wiki/FlyBase:Downloads_Overview)

New bulk downloads include:
• Aberrations - gene deletion/duplication data
• Split system combinations
• Human disease model reports
• Single Cell RNA-Seq Metadata
• Gene model status and annotation comments
(there's more!)

FlyBase: Current Release

FlyBase: a database for drosophila genetics and molecular biology

There's an update on the state of FlyBase on the FlyBase.org front page.

You can contribute to FlyBase at this link wiki.flybase.org/wiki/FlyBase:Contribute_to_FlyBase.

We express enormous gratitude to the people, labs, groups, and foundations who have already helped us. #FlyBase #Drosophila

Shocking news: the whole @flybase.bsky.social team at @harvard.edu will be laid off on October 12! Devastating for #DrosophilaResearch community, as #FlyBase has been a crucial database for genetic and genomic information on fruit flies. The impact of this loss will be significant! #Harvard #Science

Plea from the #ISMBECCB2025 keynote Q&A that we all cite the databases and resources (and software!) that is used.

For example, #Flybase had just over 100 citations in 2024 - yet used far more than this which undermines demonstrating impact with funders.

Biomedical research budget cuts at Harvard threaten @FlyBase — known as the “Wikipedia of fruit fly research ,” fueling key discoveries in Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, addiction, birth defects, and more.

Why a database of bug genes could be one of Trump’s most devastating cuts at Harvard

FlyBase, the world's only fruit fly database, is in the crosshairs of Trump's attack on Harvard. Here's why it could matter for your health.

@sundogplanets I never actually cited it, but the oldest known reference describing Drosophila is “Mentzel, 1684”. In #FlyBase it has the honor of being the very first bibliographic entry in the database, with the identifier FBrf0000001.

A copy of the paper, in latin with an English translation, is available (well, “available” behind a paywall) in Peyer, 1947.

“The only reason FlyBase is in trouble is simply because the grant is being channeled through Harvard”

There is another reason: it’s essentially centralized, both its server and the data curation and ingestion process. Hence not resilient.

Whoever is running crawlers on FlyBase – likely for nefarious "AI" purposes – may you please stop abusing this service: you are killing it. I know that, of course, you won't: anything not nailed to the ground you consider yours for the taking. These attitudes can only foster walled gardens – login requirements, at least – or entirely going dark, drawing this resource away from the general public. Everyone loses, including you. If you wanted the whole of FlyBase, an email or a site visit would have resulted in a hard drive full of data – it's public after all.

"FlyBase’s servers have been experiencing an unprecedented amount of traffic recently, which has been causing the site to crash. We have been working on how to implement a system for banning IPs in a way that allows the site to stay online as much as possible, while affecting the fewest number of legitimate users. Without these IP-blocking measures, FlyBase would be down most of the time."

#Flybase is seeking two new members to join the Cambridge UK group: a metabolic pathway biocurator https://www.jobs.cam.ac.uk/job/42797/ and a phenotype biocurator https://www.jobs.cam.ac.uk/job/42825/. Prior #biocuration experience is not required, so these positions are great for both fly researchers looking for a fulfilling, fly-related career away from the lab & who enjoy the challenge of organizing complex data, as well as experienced #biocurators with #Drosophila experience.
