Concluded Thursday and welcomed Friday with The Blue Land by Matthieu Bordenave, released on ECM in 2024

Tyran Grillo wrote for ECM Reviews:

In this follow-up to 2020’s La traversée, saxophonist Matthieu Bordenave again joins subtle forces with pianist Florian Weber and bassist Patrice Moret, now adding drummer James Maddren. The result is a new songbook written by the bandleader for the group at hand.

...The title track is a more abstract wonder that dabs its brush into a palette of even finer details. Dampened pianism weaves through caressed drums and a distant tenor before the bass drops its harmonic stones into the water.

NYC Five by Angelika Niescier and Florian Weber, released on Intakt Records in
2016.

With their new album, alto player and bandleader Angelica Niescier and pianist and composer Florian Weber both from Cologne, Germany place themselves at the centre of the New York jazz scene. Their quintet NYC FIVE is completed by three jazz musicians in great demand in the “Big Apple”: trumpeter Ralph Alessi, bassplayer Christopher Tordini and drummer Tyshawn Sorey. The quintet plays highly contemporary jazz with original tunes, distinctive arrangments, complex rhythms and expressive improvisations. Laurence Donohue-Greene, editor at «The New York City Jazz Record» writes: "With this new dynamic quintet – Angelika, Florian, Ralph, Chris and Tyshawn present a unique aura of timelessness, as much influenced from decades past as about the present and future state of jazz...

Ended Thursday and welcomed a Friday off work after a later long swim with La Traversée by Matthieu Bordenave, released on ECM in 2020.

Tyran Grillo wrote for ECM Reviews:

...ever open to the possibilities of space and unstructured play. Other influences include classical chamber music, especially of the modern French persuasion (think Messiaen and Dutilleux). Classical training indeed comes to the fore in his technical control while his love of jazz spreads across eight originals in the fashion of a spilled glass of water—inching ever closer to the edge of the table but prevented from falling by delicate surface tension.

When the darkening of “River,” a duet between the bandleader and Weber, makes its gradations known, we find the saxophonist sitting alone in a place of seeming childhood significance...

Ended Thursday and welcomed Friday after a walk with Lucent Waters by Florian Weber, released on ECM in 2018.

Tyran Grillo wrote on ECM Reviews:

"German pianist Florian Weber follows 2016’s Alba in the company of a fresh quartet. Trumpeter Ralph Alessi, with whom Weber has the longest association of those gathered, is a free and democratic spirit. Bassist Linda May Han Oh, here making her ECM debut, is a deeply grounded soul. And drummer Nasheet Waits, whom Weber had already admired and was suggested by producer Manfred Eicher, is a detailer of the highest order. Says Weber of the group: “It’s the first time I’ve had a band where what particularly interests me is the difference between the players and their approaches to improvising.” But while they do indeed have distinct voices, the music they play and its sequencing embody a masterstroke of interlocking associations..."
