I have got a visitor: a dead CBM 4040 disk drive. The symptoms: all LEDs stuck on. No disk activity. This means the 6502 does not boot correctly.
First checks: voltages are correct, reset is working, clock is present.
Next up, OneROM with Piers Finlayson‘s IEEE diag ROM. However that also doesn’t want to boot.

Yep. I like this endeavor.

I have been searching for a way to use a 5.25 inch drive over a USB connection. I’d like to create an FPGA design to be the controller, unfortunately I don’t have any USB protocol design experience as that will likely be the “choke point” of this design.

The addition of more drives definitely has a linear-ish scaling in bandwidth. With three disks, the software RAID of floppy disks is up to a whopping 1.09kBps!
