@mitvorteil having said that, I still appreciate #dnd5e s robust core Mechanism: the unified d20 roll high against some target number. I tried several 5e hacks - #FiveTorchesDeep for example which is a great alas incomplete hack. #Shadowdark kind of solved the conundrum for me through unholy marriage between stripped down 5e core mechanics and #osr playstyle. Such a great game for onboarding newbies! 2/2
Follow-up #ttrpg question: How could a #lifepath mechanic be integrated in an #osr Adventure Game? - in a meaningful and fun way, not in a generating-20-pages-of-backstory-way. Only example that comes to my mind is the abstract approach in „Origins“, a supplement for the 5e + B/X mash-up #FiveTorchesDeep
@ArneBab Frühe (und coolere 😜) #dnd Versionen waren ja sogar auf so große Runden ausgelegt. Vlt. 1 Aktion pro Spieler*in: dann fliesst das - believe me. Mehrfach-Angriffe und so führen zum 🐌 -Spiel 1/x
@Mumintroll 3 Years ago, I friend ran a short Moonshae campaign for us. We were using the #osr hack #FiveTorchesDeep and it was a blast.
@moodywarlock @SimonHain the #5e #osr hack #FiveTorchesDeep (game does‘nt get as much as Shadowdark these days 🙁) also provides a neat solution for making osr combat gritty while also less deadly than B/X or ODnD. Once PCs are zeroed, you roll on a little table. There are good chances that a PC doesn’t die, but escapes death‘s embrace with a lingering or permanent injury.
@HeyeBodo @Rorschachhamster my search for #FiveTorchesDeep exhumed your Oct. post. I, too, like Shields Shall Be Splintered, but I didn't remember that FTD included it! There's a house rules doc floating around by an #OSR blogger called Ten Foot Polemic. It was designed for his #LamentationsoftheFlamePrincess adventuring, but the ideas are easily ported to other systems. I remember it being really useful. Lots of great stuff available on his site: https://tenfootpolemic.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2019-12-22T10:13:00-08:00&max-results=7&start=5&by-date=false&m=0
Ten Foot Polemic

An OSR blog by this guy right here.

@tintenteufel for me (I love both games) not really. I can easily play b/x #ose modules with the #Shadowdark rules set only making minor adjustments. Differences: low level SD characters are more robust compared to super fragile B/X characters. Magic-Users are also more capable, given that SD ditched Vancian Casting in favor of a roll to cast mechanic (similar to #FiveTorchesDeep or #DCC). In SD low lvl PCs also level up quicker than in B/X.
