One of the authors who popped up as an option when I was considering what to read for 1925 was the Russian writer, Maxim Gorky. His novel, "The Artamonov Business", was published in that year and I do have a copy lurking as a possible read. However, I noticed from a Fitzcarraldo newsletter that they were issuing a non-fiction work by Gorky, …

Currently taking my time to read this scintillating and heartbreaking work, Second Hand Time by Svetlana Alexievich. A huge (700 page) distillation of so many monologues from women (and some men) who reminisce, idolise/idealise and grieve about life before the fall of the Soviet Union. The voices are those of the subjects, but she weaves a fascinating cloth from it all.

Second-hand Time | Fitzcarraldo Editions

Second-hand Time is the latest work from Svetlana Alexievich, winner of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Literature. Here she brings together the voices of dozens of witnesses to the collapse of the USSR in a formidable attempt to chart the disappearance of a culture and to surmise what new kind of man may emerge from the […]

Finished my re-read of ‘Death on the Nile’ in double quick time. A very familiar story to me by now but it still captivates. Moving on to another fascinating #FitzcarraldoEditions publication, Ian Penman’s ‘Fassbinder Thousands of Mirrors’… #books #bookstodon #literature #nowreading

Morton Feldman’s ‘Triadic Memories’ playing in the background which seems the perfect soundtrack for Fosse. #bookstodon #JonFosse #DamionSearls #FitzcarraldoEditions

On my blog today, I've written about ALISS AT THE FIRE, Jon Fosse's haunting, atmospheric novella about grief and loss.

When I started into my first really big translation project (#AnneCarson, Eros the Bittersweet), #FitzcarraldoEditions published this very long and very brilliant essay by Kate Briggs on #translation : This little Art. It helped me a lot along the way to actually understand what I’m doing. And now I see that they will publish her first novel in May 2023. Yay! #literature #novel
