Warning; Questions about Colonisers and #FirstFleet

(Please boost for reach, and CW your answers)

———-
today there are several questions of varying degrees of difficulty;

i was a captain in the british royal navy
i was appointed commodore of the first fleet
and i was first Captain General and Chief Governor of the new colony of new south wales
i returned to england in 1792, with kidney stones

who am i?
from which port in england did the fleet set sail?
how many ships in the fleet?
which of the fleet ships was I on when i left england?
which ship was i on when I first arrived?
where did we first land?

finally…
i might be the first anglo known to have said
“yeah nah” on the soil of what-came-to be-called-australia
when i said this, i decided we should all pack up and relocate to a new spot 20km north (by sea).
what date did we arrive at the new spot?

#OTD in 1788, the final seven ships joined the four vessels of the #FirstFleet already in #BotanyBay. (HMS Supply arrived on 18 Jan; three others on 19 Jan.)

Four days later, the two vessels of the French La Perouse expedition arrived.

By 26 Jan, the British gave up on establishing a colony there—too shallow and swampy and with little fresh water—and sailed north to Port Jackson instead. It wasn’t until 9 Feb that they officially founded #Sydney.

The Transports is a folk ballad opera written by Peter Bellamy released by Free Reed Records in 1977...It featured many artists from the 1970s English folk revival,.. The orchestral arrangements were by Dolly Collins.

The story is based on an account of two convicts of the First Fleet, Henry Cabell and Susannah Holmes as given by Norfolk historian Eric Fowler. According to Fowler's research, which begins in 1783, young Henry Cabell receives a sentence of transportation for fourteen years for the burglary of a country house. Another youngster, Susannah Holmes, receives a sentence of transportation for an unrelated theft. - Wikipedia

*edit the yt channel the original link came from is a far-right extremist one, so replaced with a link to the Shrewsbury Folk Festival re-telling of the folk opera which I have not watched but will.

First Fleet class ferry "Supply" approaches Milsons Point wharf.

Sydney's First Fleet class ferries were introduced in the 1980s and each of the 9 ferries bears the name of a ship in the First Fleet (the flotilla that brought the first English convicts & colonists to Australia).

I'm currently reading "1788", Tim Flannery's edition of the two journals of the earliest days of white settlement in Australia by Watkin Tench, a captain of the marines.

What's remarkable - given the European mind-set at the time - is Tench's open-mindedness and willingness to listen and learn. At first he sees the local Aboriginal peoples around the Sydney area as "savages"; then he gets to know them personally, takes the trouble to learn their language, and so sees them as individual people who he comes to greatly admire and respect.

We have gone backwards in huge leaps since then. And the biggest thing we've lost, it seems to me, is the ability to listen and learn. If we kept our mouths shut and our ears and minds open we may do a lot better.

Australia Day is sacrosanct they say. It’s my right as an Australian to celebrate the day that the #FirstFleet arrived at #SydneyCove.

It’s my god given right to wave the Australian flag. To drink 57 stubbies, eat a leg of lamb. To spew all over everyone.

It’s in my DNA. I would die for. It’s who I am.

Hey Bruce, if you work Australia Day, I’ll give you either Friday or Monday off.

Bruce: great that’ll give me the a long weekend. You, I’m in.

#Bogans #Racist & the #PerpetuallyOutraged, can guck right off.

I overheard a fellow old white man boasting about being "5th generation Australian, I can trace my ancestors back to the first fleet"
So what? All Aboriginal Australians are about 1600th generation, you don't hear them boasting about it. Maybe they should. #firstnations #aboriginal

Actually I am first generation convict descendant because my dad knocked out a copper in a pub brawl in the 50s so he served 3 months behind bars. #Convicts

Ever wonder why #FirstNations Aussies refuse to celebrate #AustraliaDay? - look at the images below, and wonder no more!

The arrival of the #FirstFleet brought us nothing but heartache, misery and #genocide.

Who celebrates their own destruction?

Happy #InvasionDay2020
