2023 Novella of the Year: Firewalkers by Adrian Tchaikovsky. I'm still in awe that it's written by someone born and raised in UK, as the understanding that developed nations norm =/= rest of the world norm is strong, and all the cast were humanised in ways rarely seen in things written by wealthy nations writers. Adrian Tchaikovsky _gets_ it.

(____ Of The Year is based on the year I first had access to it, NOT based on the year of release).

Essentially my issue with the ending is that, the book put in so much effort in talking about the AI god being essentially human in its/her thinking patterns, it/she still somehow ended up choosing the most best-for-readers-feel-good, rather than what you'd expect a flawed human would do in her position.

I also love the irony that if you are reading this book, chances are you are a Sonko. This whooshed past I'd say 90% of the readers, based on the reaction.

Finished Firewalkers. It's absolutely incredible, one of my favourite this year to date. I do find the ending is too improbable feel good for my liking, for very specific reasons that would be spoilers. Other than that, it is phenomenal.

NGL, I'm intuitively less grossed out by eating insects, than eating mammals or vertebrae water creatures. Dairy milk of other mammals are weirder still, which is unfortunate considering that's how my ancestors survived this far lol.

Firewalkers is the kind of rehab I needed after suffering through more Ascendance of Bookworm than I perhaps should have.

Here's the actual respect toward people without infrastructure and in poverty. Adrian Tchaikovsky gets it.
