I'm very impressed with the quality of the Firefox Translations. They're not perfect by any means, but the results are more than good enough for something that's running locally on my mobile. I just tested Ukrainian to Spanish with the article below:

"Методички НАТО більше не працюють". Чому на полігонах Польщі військових ЗСУ не навчали воювати дронами - BBC News Україна

Чимало військових, які пройшли цю підготовку, нарікають, що там готують до війни минулого без дронів – за натівськими сценаріями з Іраку й Афганістану. При цьому і в Генштабі, і в Міноборони Польщі стверджують, що БПЛА у програмах підготовки є.

@j4n3z hihi, came here from the tag and got your post auto-translated from #FirefoxTranslations so I hope I understand it correctly - but does linux support rpi5 so badly? If it doesn't run linux well, what does it run then? BSD I know not enough about... cheers!
the one time i need #FirefoxTranslations but it doesn't know #japanese :c

My god is Firefox Translate a hot mess.

A page can be 99% Greek but has three or four loanwords in English so the auto detect doesn't work - and then for some reason you have to click four times in the hamburger menu to force it to translate, rather than just click an always-present toolbar icon.

Somehow it can take 20 seconds to translate a hundred words of text, which is about the speed I can do it at, and the translation is often unusable anyway.

And god, put in an 'always translate *to*' option so I can stop clicking on the only language I would ever want anything translated to every time I translate something.

@Shunra
So, any such service (OCR? doctor handwriting OCR? translation?) that does not require sending data to a remote server?

#FirefoxTranslations does not support #Hebrew yet. I'm not aware of any other free project that does.

Why? - Decent in-place, offline translation for web pages · Also works in #LibreWolf · Supports #Spanish #Estonian #English #German #Czech #Bulgarian #Portuguese #Italian #French #Polish · Experimental #Russian #Persian (Farsi) #Icelandic #Norwegian (Nynorsk, Bokmål) #Ukrainian #Dutch · Downloads language models upon first use

Oh, very cool.

https://www.ghacks.net/2023/04/16/firefox-users-get-a-native-translation-option-soon/

Til now, i've been using https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/firefox-translations/ , which works well, albeit has a clunky UI. This apparently next-gen advance on the AO, baked-in via #aboutconfig, & enabling both the options per article, is elegant & effective, using https://linuxnews.de/ as my guinea pig. Nice; another AO now redundant.

Woohoo... new overnight update to FF AO #FirefoxTranslations ... & it's now fabulous! It's so improved over previous version that it now entirely obviates my only recently discovered & installed #ToDeepL AO, which i've now removed. The new version seems to have fixed all my hitherto gripes about its popup's/dropdown's patchy behaviour. Melikes!
