Therein i read

Lists are unique to you. The members do not know they are in any of your lists.I focused onto that latter part...The members do not know they are in any of your listsSlightly unsettled, i read on...You do NOT need to be following the account to add it to your listNo, wait... wtf? Combining both statements... my paraphrasing:If a member explicitly attempts to avoid being Followed "anonymously" by peeps of ill intention, via setting their Preferences to require her manual approval of all Follow Requests, but if anyone can simply bypass that nominal safeguard via this bloody sneaky Lists function, then just how safe really is #Firefish? 🤷‍♀️What protects marginalised peeps from being harvested in bulk by arseholes eagerly using / abusing this Lists tool? Unless i'm missing the point, this Lists thing is a terrible design error! 😱

My first real deep-dive into #Firefish over the last 36 hours has been frenetic, steeply learning, fun & amazing [31/7/23].

NB @ 6/8/23 | I first posted this 6 days ago in my original #Firefish account, @MsDropbear42, whereat it was buggy & troublesome from the start. I have fought with it several times since then, & lost every battle. I am now reposting it in my current Firefish account, @[email protected], where i hope it might be better behaved. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Firefish's GUI & hugely granular Settings are a pretty different beast from #Mastodon, so i've had heaps of learning, setting up, fiddling & finessing to do. I've reached a point now where it's seriously good, in many ways a far better UX than in Masto... & yet sadly, i believe that for now i need to leave it alone for a while & return to Mastodon as my daily socials client.

Fwiw, self-notes i've just scribbled down for my later reference.

1. Atm impossible to stop timelines auto-updating [no #SlowMode per Masto], & this is stressful. Albeit they don't AU when already scrolled down from the top, but if i'm reading the top toot the t/l can & does reload sans-warning & displace my toot being read by however many new toots just arrived. This is hugely discombobulating!

2. Atm no native way to globally stop Boosts appearing in my Home timeline [in Masto this is simple via one click]. I had to use the clumsy inefficient workaround of manually muting boosts for each individual account i Follow.

3. The #Firefish paradigm afaict is fundamentally different to Masto in that for the latter, my Home t/l remains useful even if i Follow no other accounts, coz it's populated with my Followed Hashtags plus any Followed accounts. Given my strong preference is to follow myriad tags, but minimal accounts, that's great for me. Otoh in Firefish the Home t/l seems to be exclusively for toots from accounts i follow, ergo, if i choose to follow nobody, this t/l is empty.

4. As said, Followed Hashtags do not appear in my Home timeline. I had to create an Antenna for them, then display it as a parallel timeline. This causes me cognitive overload & partially duplicated reading work.

5. This one might be The Killer though. There's an official Bug re Antennas, whereby they only show a subset of the targets, but then repeat all these over & over as one scrolls down that timeline.

It's a great pity, not only that maybe the past 36 hrs might have been a waste of time & effort, but much more importantly, IMO Firefish in many ways is already a superior* UX than Masto... but its fatal flaws atm seem a showstopper for my needs. I'll keep the tab pinned but unloaded, & keep checking in every few weeks to see if improvements might have happened.

Unlike my Home t/l, my Antenna is entirely ignoring my filters for #ServerMutes & #WordMutes. Combined, these three flaws for Antennae represent a simply major deficiency in my Firefish UX compared to Masto. 😭

Ugh, on top of the major bug [https://git.joinfirefish.org/firefish/firefish/-/issues/10535] that makes using Antennae for the vital task of following #Hashtags [given that weirdly the FF design excludes them from the Home t/l like Mastodon does] unusable, i've now discovered two more very disappointing things in my Antenna. Unlike my Home t/l, my Antenna is entirely ignoring my filters for #ServerMutes & #WordMutes. Combined, these three flaws for Antennae represent a simply major deficiency in my Firefish UX compared to Masto. 😭

After the change to the Cached-based antennas, antennas do not show posts beyond the first "page" of results. Scrolling down to load more posts will load the same...

Wasted ahem invested a few more hours today trying to get my #FollowedHashtags #Antennae working ok in my new #Firefish account @[email protected], & somehow eventually i seem to have stumbled onto the solution [albeit, IMO, i've not ostensibly altered my method from the very first way i tried it at the beginning (which did not work), causing me to try all manner of alternative ideas (also didn't work), so then i retraced my steps to the beginning method again] ... beats me how come now finally they seem to be good 🤷‍♀️

On the basis of that outcome, i decided to proceed with formally #Migrating my initial #Firefish account @MsDropbear42 to @[email protected]. Pretty damn irritating. Been trying for ~ 2hours to do it, by first doing per Pic1 in firefish.lgbt, then after ~15' arbitrary waiting [in hope the setting would percolate thru the fediverse], per Pic2 in firefish.social. That repeatedly failed with the spurious error msg that i'd not set up the alias yet, which patently i had. I tried several more times, at which point clearly the firefish.social server got cranky with me & told me to piss off for now, per Pic3.
