Hydranten an der Lösekestraße, Sennelager.

Ich habe mich entschieden den Post mit den 3 Hydranten im 4:3 Format wieder zu löschen und die Hydranten im Squareformat zu posten. Für Hydranten ist 4:3 zwar ideal, aber es hat mich in der Fotoübersicht gestört. Ich werde dabei bleiben nur quadratische Bilder hier zu posten.

This Is My Glasgow Feb 22

In the 1920s, the name grandually shifted, and the original F.P. style signs (left) were replaced by ones with the letter H on them (right). It wasn't until the 1940s and 1950s that the standardised fire hydrant signs we are now familiar with were finally introduced. However, a few of these earlier versions still exist.

Old fire hydrant markers on Glasgow University's Gilmorehill Campus. The valves fitted to water pipes which we now know as fire hydrants were originally known as fire points, marked by the leters F.P., when they were first intoduced in the late 1800s (which replaced the earlier fire plugs, which were literally plugs fitted into water pipes).

Finally, they became known as fire hydrants and the FP markers replaced by the H-style markers we have today. I've never been able to track down the exact dates for any of these transitions, but this one has clearly been there for a while.

An old Fire Point marker on Thornliebank Raod on the outskirts of Glasgow. What we now know as fire hydrants were originally called fire plugs, marked by the letters FP, and were simply holes cut in wooden water pipes that were then fitted with a plug. Later, they were replaced by more permanent values, and the name was changed to a fire point, allowing them to keep using the FP markers.
