yahoo news | French bank raided in probe of diplomat over Epstein links
Parisian financial investigators raided the headquarters of the Edmond de Rothschild Bank in Paris on Friday as part of a probe into a French diplomat alleged to have been involved in the Jeffrey Epstein affair. The public prosecutor’s office for financial matters said the inquiry focuses on accusations that the diplomat engaged in bribery of a foreign public official, prompting searches not only at the private‑bank offices but also at other premises linked to the case.
The diplomat, who had previously worked for the Edmond de Rothschild Bank and later for the French energy group Engie, was placed on leave and subsequently suspended after French media revealed his connections to Epstein. According to the investigation, he exchanged dozens of emails with Epstein that centered on business and financial matters rather than the sex‑offence allegations that have dominated the scandal. Prosecutors also allege that he passed confidential documents to Epstein and used his diplomatic network to help the convicted financier gain access to high‑level officials.
Following the revelations, France’s foreign minister, Jean‑Noël Barrot, referred the matter to the public prosecutor’s office and launched disciplinary proceedings, describing the allegations as “extremely serious.” The ongoing investigation aims to determine whether the diplomat’s actions constitute illegal bribery and a breach of his official duties.
