This week was a bit of a clusterfuck.
I still got paid to work, so that's a good thing, but a clusterfuck nonetheless.
Customer wanted fiber run from one building to an outbuilding. They had conduit all laid out and buried, pullstrings, that was all set. The path between the main datacenter in the main building and the MDU in the outbuilding was easy enough.
Problem is, #Arista (who is going to be providing their switches when they do their network upgrade here soon) told them they needed to use single-mode fiber "for future-proofing"... Problem is, the run was less than 600 feet.
Wednesday we laid out the single-mode fiber and ran it between the buildings, only to find out the customer didn't have any single mode SFPs to plug into their switches... So they ordered some and asked if I could come back Monday...
Thursday I get a call from my boss letting me know that I'm going back Friday (today) to run multi-mode along side the single-mode I've put in already... .and terminate it at both ends.
Got all 600 feet of it run, terminated the fiber ends, and cut over to the new link.
Now they can finish remodeling the outbuilding, put a roof on it, etc, etc, etc, and take the old aerial drop down.
In a few weeks I'm going back to run copper to all the workstations in the building. At that time I get to re-terminate the fiber in that MDF.. because I had to make this one TEMPORARY.. because the cabinet/rack they had in that room was only 12" deep. I'll be hanging a new, 24" deep cabinet, installing a proper LIU, and performing all the cable management necessary to make it beautiful and functional.
The single-mode is still there. Maybe they'll use it in the future for extension to a further building, but it's going to go un-used now... It was installed for naught... but at least I got paid to do what the customer wanted.
