In “Re:Birth,” videographer Vadim Sherbakov explores the fascinating patterns of ferrofluids, which suspend tiny ferrous particles in another liquid, often oil. When this magnetic liquid is mixed with ink or paint, its black lines take on a labyrinthine appearance. The result is rather psychedelic, especially with Sherbakov’s bold colors. Have any of you seen The Subtance (2024) with Demi Moore? I made a whole series inspired by that film. I thought it was genius how they chose that very specific Barbie pink colour as a reference: it's close enough to resemble skin but also not quite so. Synthetic, artificial skin. I tried to do something as close as I could to that. Wet, slimy, shinny like plastic. That movie is an art director's dream! All the references are just amazing. Better not look at the second slide if you have trypophobia.

This is the interaction of ferrofluid and ink under a macro lens. Ferrofluid was actually invented by NASA in 1963 and is a truly amazing liquid composed of nano ferromagnetic parcicles (iron, basically) that behave in a certain way when under a magnetic field.

Nerdiness apart, the point being is that it's really a fun and amazing liquid to play with. I'm still exploring its behavious with other liquids. Here in this photo it's just a mix with white ink.

I'm getting major H. R. Giger vibes from this one. What soundtrack would you add? I just hear NIN when I look at it.
