This is a big part of why if, for example, you pay or donate, etc $200 to someone, they get less-than that $200 — the credit card and Stripe fees.

Stripe, of course, adds their own fees on top of the credit card system fees.

So, with Stripe, the fees end up looking something like:

U.S.: 2.9% + USD $0.30

Canada: 2.9% + CAD $0.30

EU: ~1.5% + €0.20

Etc.

...

There is also an extra 1% fee for "international" cards.

And, an extra 1% fee for currency conversations.

Etc.

...

All platforms and systems that use Stripe are affected by this — including CrowdBucks.

Most people probably don't know this, but —

If, for example, you pay someone $200 using a credit card, the person you paid does NOT get $200. They get less-than that!

For example, there might be a 3% fee due to paying with a credit card.

And, the person you pay ends up getting only $194 (rather than $200). ($6 was taken in fees.)

(This is why some merchants will give you a discount if you pay by cash — since with cash that fee isn't there.)

CrowdBucks is a open-source, Fediverse-native way to FUND THE FEDIVERSE:

• to help sysops pay server bills,

• to support developers creating Fedi software, and

• to fund creators on the Fediverse.

...

The MVP of CrowdBucks uses Stripe as its credit card payment processor.

One of the challenges with credit cards and payment processors is the fees.

Here is what I mean …

Back in the year 2022 — myself, @atomicpoet , and @massoud were talking about how to FUND THE FEDIVERSE.

• to help sysops pay server bills,

• to support developers creating Fedi software, and

• to fund creators on the Fediverse,

...

This same topic came up in this year's FediForum 2025!

...

Given the importance of funding the Fediverse and the recent discussion — soon it will be released as open-source software.

I've collected stores that sell fediverse related merchandise into an #AwesomeList

These stores often provide some funding back to the platforms, instances, etc. that run them - those are identified as such (it's most of them!)

If there's any I missed, please let me know.

I'm already thinking bigger, so this will probably include platform and developer funds as well (no merch).

Future plans: RSS, JSON, API for this data.

@lewiscowles1986 One way you can let the EU know that you'd like more funding into the FOSS Grassroots which includes several Fediverse Projects, is to fill in the consultation that @fsfe has written about and has a guide on how to fill it in.

This is the political action folks can take right now.

The deadline is September 20th.
