What a First Third Week!

Three nights of live streamed music events in the Fedi via @owncast went down a storm!

Pulu

Starting with @thisoccasionalsociety‘s 3rd W3dn35day gig, bathed in purple light and surrounded by a multitude of screens and colourful blinking gizmos, pulu (@ahihi) began the set by saying that pretty much everything that could go wrong had gone wrong, and that they were forced to go with a last-minute plan B and hoped for the best. Pulu then proceeded to conjure up some lovely twinkling chords out of the legendary Music Mouse program on an old Mac running System 7, before switching to their live-coding environment. The public was then treated to an astonishing mix of delicate soundscapes, powerful intricate beats and basslines, mesmerizing synthetic and organic textures mixed in with sampled speech and field recordings. That would have been wondrous enough, except that Pulu knows how to marshal all that technology and all those sounds in service of an exceptional musical sensibility, which constantly walks a fine line between harmonic tension and glorious relief, or to put it differently, Pulu totally killed it and blew the socks off everyone in the TIBtv chat.

Control

Control (@[email protected]) absolutely ripped it up in the first NHAM in Concert event on Thursday, with an oontzing, stomping, near-two-hour set. He played the whole of the album MANIPULATE on the 25th anniversary of its release, followed by some bangers from his latest covers album. The chat was rocking and we had over 50 people come through the doors! The love shown was there to see both in the chat and by way of donations – his ko-fi page surpassing the $333 goal. One particularly touching message came in after the show from someone control hadn’t met before. They were merely watching TIBtv when the show kicked in. They loved the show, its “global tiny desk vibes”, donated, shared the album, learnt that CHVRCHES existed from the finale cover, and is now loving them.

Meljoann

Rounding the week of live streams off, the NHAM Listening Party proved a big success too. We were slightly apprehensive as to how this might be received as it was a mostly audio affair on a visual platform (@TIBtv), but it went down a treat. Again a super-appreciative audience were in and showed their love to @meljoann as they listened to her album Status from start to finish. Meljoann was there herself to feel the love. Here are a few gem quotes from her in the live chat:

New TIBtv Schedule and New Fresh Video Show

We’ve been on air for almost a month! That seems impossible. During that time we’ve continued to get new submissions which is great! 

For launch month we centered our programming around daytime hours in each part of the world due to holidays, and we had to keep our segments short until we had enough material to put on a good show!

Well now we can make some important changes that we hope you’ll love:

Ready For Prime Time

– The schedule still repeats 3 times a day but we are now targeting prime time in each part of the world starting at midnight UTC (prime time in the Americas), 6am UTC (prime time down under) and 6pm UTC (prime time in Europe). Thanks to schedule repeats, you can generally catch shows during the day as well.

– There will still be more than 5 hours of eclectic “everything plays” tucked in throughout the day. This firehose of genre-fluid videos will keep you guessing “what next?”

– Electronic, Pop, and Rock shows are now a full hour!

– NHAM Live and Talk shows will play twice each day at alternating times.

– Finally, we are planning a Friday night Electronic takeover!

New Fresh Video Show

– We’ve added a 30 minute Fresh show to showcase new material recently added to the channel, and those tracks will go into heavier random rotation.

This means artists who submit new material can tune in during the Fresh show to have a better chance of catching their videos on-air. But be aware: we are currently getting more videos than can fit in one show so you might have to watch a couple of times! This is good news.

– On Fridays, we will extend the Fresh segment to 1 hour to highlight as many new videos from that week as possible, and open the chat for the 6pm UTC Fresh hour so we can all watch the new videos together and chat about them with the artists! The Friday Fresh hour will then segue into the extended 2 1/2 hour Electronic show.

We hope you will enjoy these changes and come chat with us during the Fresh hour on Fridays at 6pm UTC!

NHAM Update Opus 12 (Fedi MTV Edition)

It’s been a while, hasn’t it? No comment. Ahem. Let me jump right in!

The Indie Beat Television

The big fedi-music-related event since the last Opus post was of course the launch of The Indie Beat Television (@TIBtv).

To say that it went well would be the understatement of the year! People joined in droves for the three staggered launch events, and marveled at @RobertaFidora’s amazing launch video, which I’m linking to right here because I can’t get enough of it.

We had planned to leave the chat open for an hour for each launch, and ended up leaving it open all day (and night). Since then, viewership has been consistently high, with some people staying connected for days on end (take a break people!).

The second best thing about the launch, was that the incredible talent on display inspired a lot of people (present company included) to dust off their cameras and submit a ton of videos, which are already airing in the pop, rock, electronic and NHAM slots. An ambient slot has just been added, and more will certainly follow as TIBtv collects a critical mass of videos in different genres (Bonkwave slot anyone?).

Possibly the best compliment about the station on launch day came from @torstentorsten, who tooted that “apart from the Fediverse, @TIBtv is the most anti-AI thing you can currently find online.”

Hats off to TIBtv mastermind @limebar, thanks to whom Fedi musicians now have a fantastic new venue to show off their talent.

And thanks to all the viewers for tuning in. We hope you’ll be moved to support the artists you discover on the station with a kind word or even material support.

Animation Array

One very special program on TIBtv that warrants a special mention is Animation Array, curated by @RobertaFidora. While the rest of the programming within the different slots is semi-algorithmic, Roberta took things a step further by carefully assembling half-hour animation programs which you won’t want to miss!

You’ll find the schedule in your timezone on tv.theindiebeat.fm, and detailed credits for the first two playlists on Roberta’s site.

In other news, we’ve published some lovely reviews from @ashnoodle and Sam (@ethicalrevolution), who reviewed Strategies Against Algorithms by Schall und Stille, @stephan’s new album which can’t be found online or purchased anywhere (OK, so maybe that’s the most anti-AI thing not online right now).

Once again, we encourage you to share your thoughts and feelings about the fedi music you love with everyone by sending us your reviews!

Releases

I usually link to all the artists who had releases featured on NHAM in these posts, but I’m going to be trying something different going forward. In the meantime, check out the RELEASES page for all the awe-insipring music in every genre conceivable released since the last opus post.

And don’t miss Sam’s first NHAM Mixtape of the year, NHAM Hereby Annunciates MTV – NHAM Mixtape 18, which showcases, you guessed it, artists featured on TIBtv.

That being said, the death of the radio star has been greatly exaggerated. If you’re not watching a screen, you really can’t beat NHAM Radio and Not What I Call Radio Bonk Wave for discovering great new fedi music or enjoying old fedi favorites!

2026

We have a few things brewing for the new year, but they will be the subject of future posts. Be sure to follow our new handle on the fediverse @nham so you don’t miss anything! Our old handle @mixtape is no longer being updated or monitored, and we still haven’t recovered all the followers we lost in the botched switchover…

In the meantime, I hope everyone survived the year-end festivities (for those who celebrate) and are keeping their heads above water in these troubled times.

NHAM and TIBtv are here to help, by reminding us that there is beauty in this world, or in the now immortal words of @meljoann, that “We CAN have nice things”.
